What did you learn today?

#26
Nice idea for a topic. : )

蜘蛛の巣, from watching 蜘蛛巣城. Also from that, that I need to watch more movies with samurai in them. : )

しかし - kept hearing it today. Guess it was time for me to learn it.

Also came to the realisation that I've been trying to do stuff that is way too hard for me, so no wonder if I get frustrated, so maybe, just maybe, I should try something actually suited to a beginner. Let's see how long that revelation lasts before I go back to trying to read that manga, looking up nearly all the words, and still not understanding the sentence...

Wow if it's that bad then maybe look into song lyrics. I did it when I was a beginner and usually rikaichan knew everything. Since u learned the word shikashi maybe that would be good

Hah, nah, I'm not too worried. It's my own fault, after all. Considering I only just started the verb section of Tae Kim, I can hardly expect to be able to understand much, can I? XD When I say I'm a beginner, I really mean it - most people seem to interpret that as meaning more like what I'd consider intermediate. Song lyrics are definitely too hard, for most songs, though I like singing along with them so still learn new words that way. : )

Have you found this useful? I think I'm gonna take a whack at this during the week. A large percentage of what I pull is from online sources, and lately I find myself hesitant to record certain words because of the time it'll take to yank them into Anki.

I tried Yomichan in the previous version of Anki, but it didn't have an option for preserving the sentence from which you culled your words, which isn't very useful.
Rikaisama takes the sentences too. Look into it and play with the settings
Thanks a lot, howtwosavealif3 and HonyakuJoshua. Just installed Rikaisama, configured the export format, and sucked some entries from the export file into Anki . This will make my online life SOO much easier. Too bad I don't have a digital copy of the マジックツリーハウス book I'm reading. :-p

I'm pretty sure there are options in Yomichan to save the word, reading, definition and sentence in anki. You need to make sure to have the right fields set up. Maybe give it another try - yomichan is fantastic.

Yeah, it says it does (via the %s pattern), but it never worked for me. At any rate, I'm on Anki 2 now, and it doesn't appear Yomichan's been ported yet. Rikaisama is fantastic so far, and works fine with Anki 2.

I also learned that kanji recently. It's ridiculously easy for me to remember because my old address in Japan had 峰 in it so it was just a matter of swapping out radicals to get 蜂.

I'm too lazy to do RTK3.

Episode 3 of season 5 has a shot of a label that's a mishmash of Japanese and traditional and simplified Chinese.

EDIT: Hah, and the Japanese part is a direct quote from a wikipedia article.

Egyptian hyeroglyphic for bee makes kanji feel like a walk in the park. How many strokes is that anyway?

I learnt the name of that famous traffic light song "通りゃんせ " while reading マリア様がみてる 28 フレーム オブ マインド. I also found about warabe uta. It was a surprise that there was one called teru teru bouzu though I knew about the dolls thanks to watching Minami-ke.

All of which led me to these youtube videos (the uploader's channel happens to be a gold mine for this stuff):
