The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread.

Congrats to all the recent finishers!! Enjoy the accomplishment because it only gets better from here on out Smile

gagge_tah Wrote:*Phew*... finally. That was really something, and I hope to god I don't have to "start over" like I read many have had to do. Just gotta muster up and continue with the review I guess.

Thanks for ALL of the awesome stories boy and girls, couldn't have don't it without them!

And congrats to everyone else that have managed this far!
From my experience, the only people who have to "start over" are the ones who end up either quitting their reviews, or not being able to review for months at a time. And even still, most of the people who started over say it was 10x faster the second time around. Old stories quickly rematerialized inside their heads, and whatnot.

If you're not looking forward to RtK reviews (I didn't, and still don't), keep your chin up. The reviews will slowly decrease to more reasonable numbers with enough time Smile

The best advice is: Just keep at your reviews and you won't even have to worry about starting over!

300 left...RTK3(Feel I should just do the rest and get this over with and merge it with my other deck)

200 left. Feeling lazy, probably just finish it off tomorrow.

48 left, heading to the final phase finally.

Done 3007, no more ever again...
I'll only add more context/vocab instead. Best to learn stuff in context then separately.

Just went through the last of the 2042 kanji. Smile It was the second time, since I had to put it down for a year, but it was so easy the second time around because most of the stories stuck.

I'll probably pick up RTK3 in a few weeks, because I bought it, and it's looking at me from my shelf with longing eyes...

btw - I am totally impressed and a little intimidated by all the people plowing through RTK3! In the year that I was away, these site-goers have become way more ambitious! Giddyup! Now I have to pick it up!

I may have finished the 2042, but I'm at around 200 reviews/day right now because I bottle-necked them all back into rotation in just a couple weeks, but once that simmers back down I'll probably tackle the RTK3.

RTK 3 doesn't take that long. A lot of the kanji, making up stories is easy b/c they are already filled with kanji already known.
I thought of adding more kanji. But I think it's best just to learn more vocab/context then just more kanji by itself.

Okay, you hooked me! I've been finding myself trying to make sense of Japanese when I see it, but I haven't studied sentences or grammar yet, so let's see how close I can get to reading the above just by the kanji, huh?

"Hello all! Something the end, and that he's celebrating the achievement (turn into achievement?) It took him 48 days to finish, and is down to 5 kanji reviews a day, and something about timed intervals for kanji characters and...strong exertion, but he's going to get a drink. He's mining sentences now..."

So how close was I, eh?

48 days to finish and down to 5 reviews a day? That seems impossible. After 48 days of cramming, you have hundreds of reviews a day if you use this site.

Even 500 would be closer to the reality, i thinkBig GrinBig Grin. He means he studied 5 hours per daySmile.

If your talking about me, my reviews are in the 100's. I recently just merged it with my production deck which is at 7000+(with the addition of 3007 kanji from RTK1+3 together). It's not hard as the meanings/writing are really already in my memory I write out the more difficult kanji that I have trouble with to get good practice.

Forgot to post on this thread after I finished! I finished a week ago, it took me about six months but at least I was able to get through it all this time. Before I couldn't get past 1500, but now that I am out of school I was able to take my time and go through it steadily. I'm still doing my reviews everyday, not sure if I will ever feel like doing the RTK3...

"Hi! I finished RTK 1. Please celebrate my success. It took me 48 to finish, and I studied 5 hours a day. Now I'm going to have a drink.

BTW, my grammar isn't very good, so would you please correct it?"

No problem.

"皆さん今日は!「RTK1」を終わった。そう、僕の成功を祝ってください。毎日5時間漢字を勉強して、終わるのに48日がかかった。今は飲むに行くよ!

とにかくすみませんが、僕は文法があまり上手じゃないけど直していただけませんか。"

Of course, this is just an option.

Congratulations for finishing RTK!

If you can learn how to write and recognize 2,042 kanjis, then you can learn as much grammar and word usages as you wish, just keep on learning and don't loose your motivation.

Ok I just finished mine as well.
I have been going on since about October 2008 so thats more than 1,5 years.
However I havent been doing it constantly, I added about 1200 until December 2008 and then I stopped for more than 1 year which was a horrible scenario to come back to. However I didnt start over again and suffered through my deck and now im finally done.

And this scares me.
I have NO idea on where to go from here. Seems everyone has it all figured out, I however dont.
I have since about 2 weeks ago started with Core 2000 series which you can download as a deck on Anki, im doing 20 new cards per day(which is not the same as 20 new facts), im trying to do a chapter of Tae Kims grammar guide every day and am soon finished with the most basic one, watching a little japanese anime with japanese subtitles, listening to music etc...but thats about it. Im trying to read shonen jump manga(in japanese of course) and its fun when I can undersand a sentence here and there but most of the time I just recognize kanjis and words, I think I need a better reading source which is suited to my vocab.

So friends, where do I go from here? I need to learn vocabs, I need to get my grammar game going and I REALLY need to start using my japanese in some immersive way, right now its just input input input and I feel like I need a little more output.

I should also say that this is entirely a hobbyproject and I have never receieved any professional tutoring worth mentioning. I do however have a burning passion to learn so I turn to all of you for help and guidance. Thank you very much!

Do things you enjoy. These are easiest to learn, because they are fun and we don't need to get motivated.

Then think of what will help you to enjoy it more - learning Kanji readings? Learning more vocab? etc...

You can go for input or output but I think that if you want a "native" sort of output you need to input for a long time (think babies and their output). However you could learn the common words such as one finds in textbooks, and you would be able to hold conversations fairly soon. It would be a strange sort of Japanese - like in English: "Hello Mrs Brown, this weather is not really my cup of tea". You know the kind of thing.

It's a difficult question for a lot of people. They say, "What should I be doing?". I say, "What would you like to do?".

Well done for finishing! You can learn anything now!

常用漢字を終えた! お疲れ様です!
After a 7 month slog, I finished with RTK1. Many, many thanks to all of you who have gone before. Without some of your stories from this site at critical moments, it would have easily taken me twice as long or more. m(__)m
