The mouse I'm using now has a rubber coating on the buttons which has become used after a couple years. There is a small patch on each button where the smooth plastic surface can be seen. Where rubber is left, it is difficult to clean and tends to attract dust.

I tried to remove the rest of the coating with solvent without much luck. The model I'm using is a Razer Pro | Solutions. The body is perfect, it's a very smooth, shiny and solid white plastic. The problem I have is with the buttons.

I'm looking for recommendations for durable mouse with NO RUBBER COATING at all whatsoever. I don't like it, it never feels clean and smooth.

I'm willing to splash for a pricey mouse if need be. I don't need the side buttons at all or any othe fancy features. Just decent looks, DPI, and top quality buttons. Problem is the coating is not indicated on Razer's website and I assume most other vendors.

Before moving to Mac I used the Logitech MX 518 optical gaming mouse. I don't do any gaming, but it's an excellent general use mouse - I now use it on my PC at work. In the three years I've had it it hasn't deteriorated at all despite heavy use.

Pros:
- Very comfortable to hold and use for long periods.
- Smooth shell, easy to clean, with no coating which might peel off.
- Very responsive, with buttons offering very little resistance but good feedback (you know when you've clicked them).
- The main mouse buttons are part of the shell, while accessory buttons are separate entities, so the buttons which get the most use are the most resilient.

Cons:
- It's wired (actually a pro for me as I don't like having to keep batteries on hand, but some people prefer wireless)

edit: I suppose the rubbery stuff around the base of the mouse *could* peel if it has a thin upper layer, but mine has never shown any signs of this. Also, I got mine considerably cheaper than that Amazon price, so shopping around might turn up a better price.

Is the side where you place the thumb rubbery?

EDIT: Ok, Amazon review says " The problem I had with this mouse is that the rubber coating on the sides started blistering and peeling off. Basically there is a rubber film/ coating on the black parts of the mouse which give it its grippy feel and under that is just smooth plastic". It's probably not going to be as much an issue as the buttons but I still hate that stuff >_>

I don't think it meets your requirements but it's the mouse I use and it's awesome. Have been using it for 2 years and no peeling of rubber, although I'm not even sure that's ever happened to me with a mouse before. Might not have had those types of mice.

DeathAdder seems to have a rubber coating as well. This pic shows what it looks like when it comes off. Granted that's probanly extreme. I have the issue in just the area where the finger tips are, on the buttons.



That said it seems like the DeathAdder Black Edition might be an option. I read the "top is barely rubberized" but what that means exactly I don't know.

Sometimes the plastic finish is non-smooth for grip, but still is plastic.

It's possible that I have caused damage with solvent in the past, although there was no visible effect, it may have made the rubber coating sticky and attracting dust.

That's too bad cause I love the white Razer It's working fine, just the damn buttons don't feel as nice as when it was new.

Huge plus from here to MX518, I've been using that mouse for 7 years and absolutely love it. On my 3rd one atm (I think), so the mouse should last at least 3 years (the surface may start degrading after ~2).
The rubber on sides is quite hard and doesn't peel off easily. I've had this one for little over a year now, and see absolutely no sign of tearing off. The previous one, which I used for 3 years until it started having some response problems, has few spots on the right side where the rubber has slightly peeled off, while the side with buttons is in perfect shape.

I am also using a Logitech MX 518 and have also been really satisfied with it. Mine does not show any signs of degrading after three and a half year of extensive use.

Apple trackpad?
Ever since i've used the apple trackpad, i have no more need for a mouse.

Good suggestion.

I have one in a drawer that I forgot to put on eBay... I really wanted to love this thing. There is something very relaxing about swiping to scroll pages while reading on my laptop or iPad. I even tried it in games!

Unfortunately, it is not really usable for working in Photoshop or creating wireframes in Keynote.

I even put it right next to my aluminium keyboard and tried to use it together with a mouse, but I like my numeric keypad and there was no space for it. Next to a bluetooth keyboard it might have been an option, though a disappointing tradeoff.

What bout SteelSeries? I just found about this vendor.
