Ugh, I'm spending all my time studying for the 2Kyuu, neglecting even food and air, and I find my weakest point are those single-sentence grammar quizzes. There's all these minute nuances I can get around in the reading passages, but not by choosing the tricky word that's just right.

Does anyone have any suggestions for hammering those dozens of grammar points into my brain? I had been inputting whole sentences into Anki, but it became pretty cumbersome and my recall was lousy. I also plan on going through the Unicom book and doing the completion questions where you fill in the blank, but first I have to get some of these things in my head so they'll stick around for a while.

Anything that's worked for you all?

I typed in sentences from the UNICOM grammar book to use as cloze flashcards. There is a link to the Excel sheet on the 2kyuu grammar flashcards thread.

Perhaps it's stating the obvious but I found I really had to get each grammar point before reviewing with my SRS felt worthwhile.

Now I'm reviewing the sentences from the spreadsheet with Twinkle and going over practice tests. For the grammar part of the test I'm scoring about 50/70 so still room for improvement.

I am doing the 1kyuu version of that. In my experience, for these sorts of things it's best just to keep taking the practice exams and going through the drill questions, looking up those you get wrong. For most of these phrases, I think linking them to something simple in Japanese you already know is better than trying to remember the English equivalent. Also, pay close attention to the sentence for clues which can tell you if the answer should end with 「ある」 or 「ない」, which at least can make in a 50-50 guess for some questions.

Personally, one thing that has helped me learn is seeing the phrases used in context in books, or hearing people say them! When I first started studying the Unicom book I thought "no one really uses these...it's a waste of time". But actually, even the 1kyuu phrases are pretty common, even if I didn't know most them. The JLPT tests really aren't as tricky and obscure as I thought. You're certainly not wasting time by studying for it.
