Both seem to mean understand however is there some subtle difference ?

Not really -- we've had threads on this exact issue before, but 分かる is the "general" kanji and 解る specifically means "understand". (分かる can also have some other meanings too)

I see, I'm just so used to seeing 分かる and then I encountered 解る and wasn't sure about it.
