Hi there!

As I've mostly used the three "A Dictionary of Japanese Grammar" books to study up till now, I've been wondering whether it would help to buy a book on Japanese Grammar written Japanese for a change. If anyone wants to share his/her experience with sources/books in Japanese that would be very helpful. I've heard some good things about: 日本語文型辞典 and was wondering if others already tried it.

I'm currently also studying for the 1級 on the side, so books like the Kanzen Master series might also be an option (they're completely in Japanese right?). I couldn't find them for quite a while, but it looks like the 新完全マスター　series has been released now. Though I don't know how comprehensive these kind of books really are.

I'm sure someone here has more experience regarding native material on the Japanese language.

I haven't really used it yet, but I've heard good things about Saburoo's　現代日本語文法概説, which also has the advantage of being (legally) freely available online.

You could check out the 日本語文法ハンドブック series (well, there are two of them). I saw it recommended elsewhere, so I bought the 初級 one to review the basics from a teacher's perspective. I haven't used it a whole lot, but it's quite readable and well organised. I should really start reading it more come to think of it.

I used the 完全マスター grammar workbook for N1 and I'd say it was pretty helpful. I've always found the grammar section easy, but I went through the N2 workbook and reviewed all the sentences from both, so maybe that's partly why.

I like 日本語文型辞典; we had a thread recently where we talked about it a bit (including comparisons with Do*JG).

I second this. I got the 中上級 one, and while it only covers up to N2 grammar, it's a really interesting read if you like reading about Japanese grammar. It's a book for Japanese teachers as well, so they list things like common mistakes non-native speakers make. I find that grammar books for students mainly cover the "how" of grammar, while books for teachers cover the "how" and "why". Google Books previews (larger than Amazon's) are here.

Also, 現代日本語文法概説 (recommended above) is really good as well.

Thanks a lot for the many replies! The 日本語文型辞典 does indeed look promising. I shall check out all of the recommendations, I hope I can find at least some of them in the book store... or maybe even in the institute library here *wishful thinking*.
