For some reason I am not being able to differentiate between the meaning and usage of 他 and 別, I know they have similar meaning in trying to refer to "another" or "the other". But I know they are not interchangeable.

Can anyone shed some light on the difference in meaning and usage of these two kanji with examples? Thanks.

Anyways, 他 is other like in

他にとるべき道はないよ。

他は「別のこと」という意味を表します。また、「ほかの人」もさす言葉ですよ。

別 too shows the meaning of "(an)other", but you can also view it as "different" or even "distinction".

例

別のを見せてくれないか？
別の見地からみる。
別の住所
別のと比較検討した。
理論と実際は別である。
昼夜の別なく
