Which one should i be buying the new version of the book or trying and get the 5th edition?
With the 6th edition arent there many changes with looking up the ref numbers?

IMO don't buy the book. Just use this site. Download the anki deck with the top two stories from here.

Get the 5th edition if you plan to use this site heavily; if you get the sixth edition and use this site, you'll have to take some care with adding your kanji to your flashcard reviews because the numbers will differ.
If you plan to use Anki or some other offsite system, or don't mind taking the time to muck around with adding your cards according to the numbers in the sixth edition support thread, then get the sixth edition.
There is some value to having the book, certainly to reading the foreward where Heisig explains the method in his own words. Also the book contains the explanations of the primitives that are not in and of themselves characters, while flashcards don't because... well, they aren't characters.

Someone made a very handy 6th edition converter, actually. You only spend like 30 seconds extra per lesson having to use the converter first =).
