Well seeing how I was too young to really understand 7 at the time it came out but what I grew up with was 8,9 and 10. I enjoyed 8 a lot but 10 was a personal favorite. Number 9 was a solid game too but not much people liked that one for some reason. I currently have the new one that came out in Japan (FF13-2) which is really enjoyable to place, especially in full Japanese. I plan to get the older ones in full Japanese(I have 8 in Japanese at the moment and another rpg that I got from the JPN PSN). I have FF13,FF13-2,FF8,Star Ocean 4 and they are all in JP.

Overall my favorite is タクティクス (original PS1 version) as I've poured more hours into that than any other game in the series. If you're just counting the main numbered version then 6 would be my favorite out of those.

FF7. But FF8 was the one I spent more time on and have more of an emotional connection to. Besides, the card game was REALLY addictive.

7 is my favorite.
Tactics and 10 are tied behind it.
And behind them are 4, 6, and 8, all about even.
I'm one of the 9 haters, haha.

I started playing FF's when 1 first came out on the NES; I've beaten 1-4, 6-9, X-2, and I've played 5, X, and 12. (I'm not counting Tactics, which is a great game)
Based on that my favorites are 1, 9, and X-2. Unusual choice, but hey.

I like these kind of topics >_>
I havent played all of the main series yet, though Im close to doing so (needing only to beat the II, V and finally the XIII that I recently bought... oh and the XIII-2 that is still fresh).
I like all of them as well, though I have some favorites too.
Story: VIII and X
VIII's story is so great that I can still remember it now, together with funny events, "007" missions, student life, romance and everything else that fits together so well making it a very fun story, imo.
Gameplay: X-2 followed by XII
X-2 has the best gameplay from all FFs that I have played, the job system while too much "sailor moonish" is very funny and addictive, though the story is worse than XII.
XII is great too, but only shines in the international version where you can speed things up together with the zodiac classes and all gambits available since near the start.

I've only played 7 through to 10-2 and 3 on iOS. 7 is easily my favourite and I liked 8 a lot. I can't stand the dungeons & dragons style setting of 9, so I couldn't really enjoy it. After the characters with functioning arms and legs in 8, it seemed like a major step back to me, and the overdrawn dialogues seemed to just get in the way at times.

8 holds a special place for me. It's been so long that I've played it, it's probably rose-colored nostalgia glasses that I'm looking through, but I loved it.
Then 6. First one I played through in Japanese. I really liked it though.
4. Also a long time ago, so I don't really remember the details, but I remember really liking it.
10. It was really good, but I don't remember the story engaging me as much as the other ones.
5. Currently playing it, but it's not very emotionally engaging to me. The job system is really fun, and the story is OK, but I can't really put it higher than this.
1. Just a fun start to the series. I could really tell that the game was dated when I played it, which knocks it a little bit. Thank god for the turbo button on my emulator.
7. I probably would have liked it better if I didn't know the entire story before starting it.
And that's all I can remember playing. The order of this list would probably change if you asked me tomorrow, because it's kind of hard to think back and rate them fairly.

I tend to never finish RPG, but I got the furthest in FFX (to the last boss, but was thoroughly bored by that point and only tried fighting it once).
I have no time to play videogames anymore, but maybe I'd give the RPGs a shot again if they were ported to iOS (some of the early ones have been remade).

My favourites are 9 and 10. Hated 12, after enduring it for 40-50 hours hoping it would get better, i just got tired of playing, really boring. Never bothered to go on and finish it.
Also i heard really good things about 6, haven´t played it yet, maybe in english and then in japanese=D.

FF6 for me. Most comprehensive FF in terms of items list and esper history. The others are good too.
FF13 i dont like too much because if you just keep going straight... you will beat the game.
