In Japan though it's known by pretty much everyone over the age of 13. I still think that makes it the most widely known Japanese song, right? I can't think of anything else.
I think it's only widely known (internationally) among the older generation who were around/teens when the song came out.

I've certainly never heard or heard of it. But yes, if it's that well known in Japan, then it wins.
howtwosavealif3 Wrote:nishino kanaThat's pretty funny. There are a few recent songs by other artists that fit that mold too:
西野カナ
『君に会いたくなるから』 ♪会いたかった君に会いたくなるからいつか会おう
『遠くても』 ♪会いたくて会えなくて会いたいの私だけなの?会えなくて切なくなる会いたい会いたくて仕方ないよ
... and the list goes on

qwertyytrewq Wrote:Haha. The version of 上を向いて歩こう I posted is a concert from 1984 (of a song that was popular in the 60s), and there are a million versions of it on Youtube. The ヘビーローテーション is the official video and is the version everyone is watching.zigmonty Wrote:ヘビーローテーションAt 60 million views compared to the other song's 25000, it's certainly a contender for the most currently popular.

And, of course, obviously Youtube favors certain younger demographics.

Covers were being recorded for at least 40 years. In English, German, Spanish... Was #3 in Australia in '95(?) Even Slick Rick, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Blige have used it. ;-p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukiyaki_%28song%29

Japanese people my age and older seem to know it and recognize it if I sing it at karaoke. As for people younger than me, well, they act like nothing happened before 1995, so I don't know.
