it's not ever since it's just based off youtube (80s70s60s50s90s they had good shit). but anyways to anyone who finds it helpful. I don't like most of these songs though personally.

Yeah... deciding the most popular song *ever* based on youtube views is a little ridiculous. Isn't it traditional to go off single sales?

*I've* watched that video and i think the song is terrible.

I mean if you just through this (if you somehow still don't know these words/phrases even though they're overused like crazy) you should be able to undersatnd like 90% of the lyrics if not 100% of the lyrics of these top 100 songs lol. for reals.

The most popular Japanese song ever is probably Ue o Muite Arukou. Not in terms of highest sales, but in terms of being the most well-known in Japan and around the world.

I hear that said all the time, but I had never even heard of it until I came to Japan and they played it in one of my university classes expecting us to recognize it, which no one did.

I think it's only widely known (internationally) among the older generation who were around/teens when the song came out.

Blue Hearts? But really, is there a japanese song that was an international success?

Yeah, internationally it's only known by older people. In Japan though it's known by pretty much everyone over the age of 13. I still think that makes it the most widely known Japanese song, right? I can't think of anything else.

(Ue o muite arukou was number one in America, I believe in 1963. So yeah, it's an internationally successful Japanese song)

More people in my generation have probably heard of ヘビーローテーション than that song. I've certainly never heard or heard of it. But yes, if it's that well known in Japan, then it wins.

I meant it was a number one single, which applies to any single that was number 1 on the billboard charts at any time. That doesn't mean it was the number one single of the year.

You were right then and I'm quite surprised. I didn't know that such a song could become a big hit.

Haha. The version of 上を向いて歩こう I posted is a concert from 1984 (of a song that was popular in the 60s), and there are a million versions of it on Youtube. The ヘビーローテーション is the official video and is the version everyone is watching.

And, of course, obviously Youtube favors certain younger demographics.

Actually, if you are just talking ANY song from Japan, the Super Mario Brother's Theme Song is probably the best known around the world.

Not really. Youtube is widely used through all ages.

What it does favour though are tracks from 2005 and up.

Allthough I found Edith Piaf in the French youtube top 100 at 26th place!

if you look for various names of 上を向いて歩こう you would see far more views than on that video. About 2 million for the top results for "ue o muite arukou", another 2-3 million for "ue wo muite arukou", another 5+ million for 上を向いて歩こう and another few million for Sukiyaki. Probably more depending on how everyone labeled it, and it doesn't include the gazillion covers and variants that this song has. I didn't look beyond the first 1-2 pages of youtube results. If you add them up it probably gets to a considerable amount.

Haha, didn't even notice this before. 上を向いて歩こう is not exactly the best song ever written, but you have some awful taste in music.

I'd have thought younger people would at least recognize the melody. Covers were being recorded for at least 40 years. In English, German, Spanish... Was #3 in Australia in '95(?) Even Slick Rick, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Blige have used it. ;-p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukiyaki_%28song%29

If I'm not mistaken, it's the only Japanese-language song to hit number one on the U.S. charts. Japanese people my age and older seem to know it and recognize it if I sing it at karaoke. As for people younger than me, well, they act like nothing happened before 1995, so I don't know.

Videos and songs are 2 different things.

People might watch AKB48 to see the young girls dance in the videos (even if the songs are terrible). AKB48 is basically a more modern Morning Musume.

Maybe iTunes Japan might be a better source for finding the most popular songs in Japan.

Yes, but what is popular right now and what is popular over a longer period of time are two different questions, aren't they?

well, heavy rotation is THE most popular AKB48 song, it was #1 in karaoke for a long time and ranked #1 in this year's AKB48 request hour set list where they vote for the top 100 AKB48 songs and perform to all of them.

but... i don't think it's fair to ask "what's the most popular song ever in japan." because i sure as hell don't know what the most popular songs ever are in america, especially now that hip hop has overtaken pop as the most popular genre.

So its not まる まる もり もり ? That song was inescapable last summer.
