I've been playing FFVI, as I mentioned in the videogames thread, and I ran across the name 獣ヶ原. Being a name, it's not in the dictionary. In the English version it was called the Veldt, which isn't much help, and I can't find a pronunciation of it on any fan sites, so it must be reasonably obvious. I don't really know what to do with the ヶ either. じゅうばら? じゅうかばら? じゅうかげん? Can anyone help me out?

Yeah, "plain of beasts" sounds about right. I was mainly interested in the reading, actually. Luckily, in one of the dialogues one of the characters eventually said the name in kana, so it turns out it's けものがはら. I never would have guessed it, but once I saw it all the other reading I had guessed sounded pretty awkward in comparison. Maybe because I was mixing 音読み and 訓読み?

The ヶ is usually pronounced が and it's an abbreviation of 箇 (the same goes for 一ヶ月, etc. though it would be か in that case). Here are the names of some places around me and their readings. Note that all of the kanji are pronounced with their kun-yomi:
鈴ヶ峰 - すずがみね a mountain peak
竹ヶ島 - たけがしま a small island
鬼ヶ岩 - おにがいわ "devil's rock" onsen
