Gender differences in japanese language

#1
I'm genuinely interested on this subject. I want to do some research on this. I'm also interested in the relation Mentality/language, how the way one person thinks affects the way the person speaks.

Do you know of any books, websites or whatever, in either japanese, portuguese or english so that I can learn a little more about this? Any sources are good, I'm also interested in sources related to this kind of subject (not necessarily the japanese language).

After having done some research and having some more knowledge about this I'll try to create some kind of discussion on this.

Thanks in advance.

I think I can find a lot of information on gender differences in English if you are interested in that...

Would have to do a little more digging to find the same type of studies in Japanese though.

For English, I would recommend Deborah Tannen's work on this subject.

I also recommend this article in HBR - "Power of Talk: Who Gets Heard and Why" which you can find on google.

Most managerial work happens through talk--discussions, meetings, presentations, negotiations. And it is through talk that managers evaluate others and are themselves judged. Using research carried out in a variety of workplace settings, linguist Deborah Tannen demonstrates how conversational style often overrides what we say, affecting who gets heard, who gets credit, and what gets done. Tannen's linguistic perspective provides managers with insight into why there is so much poor communication. Gender plays an important role. Tannen traces the ways in which women's styles can undermine them in the workplace, making them seem less competent, confident, and self-assured than they are. She analyzes the underlying social dynamic created through talk in common workplace interactions. She argues that a better understanding of linguistic style will make managers better listeners and more effective communicators, allowing them to develop more flexible approaches to a full range of managerial activities.

The Wikipedia article on the gender differences in spoken Japanese lists a few references, including one to an article available online.
