I was just wondering, how hard would it be to somehow "sync" this website with anki.
Now, I know nothing about programing, but the reason I ask is because I really love this website for studying Heisig, but often find myself with time to study, but away from the internet. Ideally, it would be great to study the kanji use anki when I cant access internet, and use this website when I can and have the two interact with each other.

Again, I know nothing about programing but from reading other postings on this forums, it would seem that alot of people would like to have this ability as an option.

I don't think it is doable right now because Anki and RevTK use different methods for scheduling the cards. You might "translate" the data one way but going back and forth wouldn't work.

Well, if its impossible, then that is that. I certainly wont complain cause I think this website and anki are both awsome and wish they had been around years ago when I first started studying Japanese.

I wonder then, is there no plans to make the website accessable offline? At the very least, I think to be able to review expired kanji offline would be a huge benefit. If one could access expired kanji through out freetime durning the day, then when one does have internet access he/she could use the other features like stories, forums, etc.

Anyways, thanks again for an amazing site. I think that Heisig`s approach is the best way for forigenrs to gain a personal connection to Japanese kanji, but it is really this site that makes it easy to study and master.

I too find myself without internet access and would be interested in a J2ME (Java mobile) app that could sync with this site and also read Anki deck files (at a later stage).

ファブリス、if I wrote an RvK clone as a J2ME app do you think you'd be interested in collaborating on developing a common file format for the synchronisation?

And to others, would anyone be interested in an RvK-style J2ME app (with possible synchronisation)?

Not to belittle your idea, however I my feeling is that this sort of thing seems really important when you are going through RTK for the first time (and you certainly can make a case that it is) but once you're through there is so much else to be getting on with.

Certainly reviewing keyword to kanji I believe is important. But with anki and other SRSs there are loads of other types of flashcard decks that people have made that we can spend time reviewing.

My opinion regarding the beauty of this site is its simplicity. Introducing syncing options for 3rd party apps would make things more confusing (for me anyway).

I would be interested in a Web 2.0 app - with possible iPhone useage.

The flashcard system used on the site is tremendous. Any way that it can grow can only be a positive.

I agree, however all ways are not equal. My preferred approach is to keep things simple and lean. The more you add features, the more it becomes unmanageable. Keeping the website really focused is the best approach for me at the moment, especially that I try to develop it in my spare time.

As for synching with another SRS for the purpose of offline support, that seems like an indirect solution to me.

Offline support is already possible now with some smart interfaces, there are solutions from Google, which require installing an extension in Firefox, or other solutions using flash files; both allow the user to store data locally, but more data than you could with the browser's cookies alone.

Those allow the developer to write an application that handles the data transparently whether it comes offline (from the user's local storage), or online (the server). The advantage for the developer being that there is only one application, offline or online, it works in the browser. Adding offline support via such options would be a better alternative, but this isn't a viable way to spend my time on koohii.com at the moment.

I've since ditched the iPhone and have gone for a Japanese phone, so I am not as fussed about Kanji drawing on the iPhone (though others might be), and I agree with your comments above.
