Hi!
We had this "Japanese only"-thread going on back in the days, and I thought it was really fun. How about we make a thread where we speak in Japanese?
I made a video of me just talking about random stuff in Japanese, and it was great fun! It's great practice because you really get to know your weaknesses when you listen to yourself afterward.
I made mistakes, I derailed so badly I had to cut out a big part of the video (when I start talking about drums, I go on and on and on...) but I learned a lot!

No, I don't mind at all
And thank you for your kind words.
I didn't think recording myself would be that beneficial, but listening to a recording of yourself compared to when you're just speaking with Japanese people is SO much different. It's kind of embarrassing, yet a great reality-check.

I'm playing with this idea a lot right now....
I was also thinking of maybe even holding an online japanese speech tournament,
with prizes and stuff.

Let's say 1000 words, video, rehearsed and improv,
give money in paypal prizes or gift certificates or what have you...
Just crazy stuff i'm playing here with to motivate people to really speak.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I'll wait till I get a digital camera that has 1080p resolution before I do anything. Plus a decent mic too. I don't like those dollar store ones haha.

Japanese aside... NICE SOLO man. Coming from a fellow drummer and musician: Very musical. I can tell you like your grooves and it comes out in your soloing. Love watching that kind of thing over insane chops any day. Not that your chops are bad either... O_O

I plan to get one early next year. There are some nice samsung+canon ones for 150-250$. Not bad prices for cameras, I remember 4 years back, they were so expensive. Guess there is a lot of competition for cameras now.

It's actually that the point an shoot camera market is in collapse because of the rise of smartphones with good enough cameras. The iPhone 4s is actually a lot better than cheaper point and shoots looking at some comparisons.

Sorry, but I honestly doubt that.

The iPhone 4S does is better than SOME point and shoots, but they're the really really cheap ones. For 150 bucks you can get a camera that is considerably better than the camera on the 4S in every conceivable way.

Something I realised while hearing to some of the recordings of users from the forum and watching videos is that all of those who recorded.. have a strange way of breathing! I find this interesting. Put nervosity etc. aside when recording, but I have the feeling of needing to learn how to breathe "in Japanese", where to make pauses etc. Anyway, great recording Zorlee, even if I didn't understand you lol

@Tori-kun: I haven't thought about it before, but that's probably true. You can make longer sentences in Japanese compared to Norwegian, so sometimes I just talk as if in Norwegian, then all of a sudden realize - I NEED AIR! Haha

This thread sounds like fun. Both your videos were really impressive (especially the drum solo) and have really motivated me to work on my own speaking. I think I'll post something in a little bit (my speaking's so bad that I need to work on it for a while XD). It won't be strictly scripted but it will be practiced.

I was thinking about this recently because I was wondering why Japanese presenters do so much umming and ahhing. It sounds to me like they prefer to keep going once they've started speaking, so if they need an extra moment to think they fill those mora with えええ instead of pausing. Obviously they do stop sometimes as well, but it seems to me that they usually do that if they still need more time to think after going えええ. This the opposite of how we do it in english, where we pause for a moment if we need time to think and add in a umm we need longer. This is just guess work though.

@exrulez: Your site sounds really interesting. I'm way outside the target group but I hope it goes well. Your mention of writing competitions got me thinking: Why not join a Japanese writing group for native speakers? I've spent some time in English writing forums and they welcomed writers of all levels from absolute begginners, who seemed to lack even a basic understanding of grammar, right up to published professionals. From what I've seen, advanced foreign learners write better than terrible native writers, so I don't think it would be a problem for you to join.

This thread really motivates me for some reason. I guess it's Zorlee's brilliant Japanese. (not that I'm qualified to judge though )

I think I'll get back to work on doing my own (audio only) recording.

Go for it man! It's great practice! And when you upload it, make sure you upload it on lang-8 as well. I just got AWESOME feedback w/ corrections on my new video from a random Japanese guy on Lang-8. Really, really useful!

Okay I've decided! To hell with this "I think I'll do it at some point" crap. I'm gonna upload one tomorrow. :mad:
