Learning Japanese with Japanese videogames.

While it's not the only game I've gotten from the JP PSN, it was one of my first. Smile I'm also glad to have the script outside the game.

While not exactly video games themselves, it is related:

NicoNico Douga seems to have quite a few '実況' videos for games, that is video of people playing the games while making comments on it. I've not really watched much, but as far as some listening practice goes? Plus people describing what they're doing could be useful as well.

Enjoy! I know I will. Big Grin

Hate to bring an old thread from the dead but I have a request/question:

The first page of this thread had a link to FF7 entire script..but that link is dead. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction as to where i can go about getting said script? Thanks!

I'll chime in that the instruction manuals are great ways to sentence mine a game, apart from the game. As you play, the context of what's being said in the manual will make more sense. Play through the game and be picky about what you mine from it, as other people mention, so you don't start hating playing games. But the instruction manuals are free to mine, many having furigana to help with difficult kanji. This is what I've been doing so far, and enjoying it.

Actually, one of the other links posted in this thread has a link to the script, or at least part of it. And a bunch of other stuff Big GrinDDD

The original link: http://lunar.littlestar.jp/stardust/english/index.html

Bunch of Final Fantasy stuff: http://lunar.littlestar.jp/stardust/english/5_game.html

There might be things for other games around there too, I haven't looked yet. If you click on the "Final Fantasy 7 Database," you get Japanese walkthroughs, item and materia guides, etc., plus the script -- with both the Japanese and the English (the English is from the American version of the game, I think). Unfortunately it looks like it's just the beginning of the game, though.... But I'm sure the complete script is online somewhere, it'll just take some searching. : D

No, and if (and probably when) they remake ff7 it will most likely be a complete remake on the strongest system available at the time. I dont know if the ds can handle ff7 graphics..i know the psp can but the ds..hmmm

thanks for the pointers in the right direction

Hmm, I just realised I've never finished FF7. I've played about 3/4 through 2 or 3 times, but keep getting sidetracked by things like exams....

Maybe its time to download a PSX emu and find a torrent of the Japanese version...

^I was thinking of doing exactly the same thing. I got up to Diamond Weapon and then stopped playing for some reason.

I can send it to you. When I saw that the web page was gone, I saved all parts I could find (by using the Internet Archive), but it doesn't seem like the script was complete. I only have the parts up to the Mythril Mines, but it's something at least.

Hey, nice thread, wish I had thought to look for it earlier. To those speaking of Chrono Trigger, I would add that in the DS re-release, you can switch J-E with about 4 taps in many dialogues. Rolling through that casually now, so the script links will probably help, thanks!

Let me add my favorite game of all time. It's for PC, and there is a good English translation, other translations, several ports to other platforms consoles and even handhelds.
So the title is 洞窟物語(どうくつものがたり) or Cave Story, by Studio Pixel. It's great. Lots of quality dialogue for a platformer. Excellent replay value. I can almost guarantee you will want to play it a second time when you beat it.
download links: http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/downloads_1.php
full japanese script: http://www31.atwiki.jp/cavestory006/

Am I really the first to post about it here? Ah, the search gets hits in another thread:
http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=1860 ... but now you have a link to the script for copypasta.
I am close to finished with RTK1, so maybe I'll get time to start an anki deck on this game? Time will tell.

Chully, Cave Story didn't really have THAT much dialogue if I remember correctly. Cool game though, but it was a little too difficult near the end for me =P

I have purchased Bio Hazard 2 and Final Fantasy 7 from the Japanese PSN today Big Grin I love both of this games and using them to learn seems a great way to go. For biohazard 2 most the game is in English with Jap subs, some o the menu is in Jap though and obviously the prompted text from action and the text in letters is in Jap. I was planning to add some screen shots of the game into Anki, things like the notes lying around, just an idea because the subject atter is interesting (to me) it might be good for vocab and grammar. Any thoughts on this?

As for FF7 i have no idea where to start, iv'e played the game so many times in English could prob make it through the game without much assistance, maybe a dictionary by my side at times. But the idea is to use it to learn and have fun at the same time. ( Any thoughts on this? Methods people have used for this or similar tasks, im sorry if this subject has been done to death. I have found a few related posts but nothing concrete seems to have come of any off it.

I have no problem putting the work in to create decks if i ned too, i believe this can be a fun and valuable/rewarding experience, but if someone could throw me a rope that would be great Smile

Yea man I was thinking the same thing, I have played the game tons arleady too. So i think it is an excellent idea to mine from sentences in the game and use the screen shots from memorable parts.

I saw a Photobucket gallery the other day with what seems to be (or will eventually be) pretty much all of FFVII in screenshots. I'll have to find out the link again.

I only have Biohazard 1 from the PSN, but I wouldn't mind trying to do something with it, even if only something small. I've got a lot of Japanese stuff, but I feel I could be actively learning more from them now and again than just merely passive exposure all the time.

Edit; http://s602.photobucket.com/albums/tt104/herman1134ff7/

Seems to just be the first bit of the game at the moment.

Edit 2; that seems like more of a sample, here's archives with the screenshots:

Part 1-10: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CFYB1933
11-18: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SA99A7QE
19-32 http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5VT5931Q
33-43 http://www.megaupload.com/?d=J75XD91U

I've only had a quick look through the first one. There's some shots with no dialogue, and for some reason the guy's changed the names to "TIFA" (instead of leaving it as ティファ) and "AERITH" (instead of エアリス), although that shouldn't really be such a big deal.

But that is apparently all of it up to the ending, maybe missing side quests, though.
