Learning Japanese with Japanese videogames.

#51
Being able to read Japanese games is my main motivation in learning the language. I'm a big Dragon Quest fan, so there's many an advantage in knowing Japanese.

I'm currently 1300 kanji into Heisig's book, though I'm taking a break from learning new ones in favour of reviewing (I seem to have let them stack a bit).

Anyway, best of luck to everyone. Final Fantasy VII is a classic PS1 game.

Region locking on the 360 is at the discretion of the publisher: most games are locked, but some are not.

Aye, I have a Japanese copy of FFT as well, although I have yet to test my teeth on the thing. I know well enough that Nippon Ichi basically rendered FFT an obsolete artifact, but I still hold a very special place in my heart for the game. I particularly want to play through FFT in Japanese because I recall that the English translation was rather subpar.

Now, FFVII, that thing had been made obsolete by FFVI.

Update on my post from above

I decided to go with PS3 for several reasons:

1) No region-lock (at least, it is not being enforced)
2) 20% off coupon at K-mart, got $500 version for $400 (still expensive! If you are interested in this, call around quick and find a store with a PS3, it lasts until 11/17 -> they should have the coupon in the store, if they don't know what coupon you are talking about, they probably just don't know what they are doing)
3) You can sign up for a Japanese account and connect to and download stuff from the japanese store (game demos, etc., all in japanese)
(link: http://blogs.ign.com/xheavenxsentx/2006/12/09/39684/ )
4) You may not be able to buy stuff from the Japanese store because they don't take american crejito kaado, but apparently (I have not done this yet), you can get a Hong Kong account, and they have many of the Japanese games, and they DO take American credit cards, so you can buy stuff like old PS1 games in Japanese
5) Tons of cool free stuff on the online store
6) My DVD player was falling apart

None of your reasons include the fact that it is the $hit Smile

Rainbow Six Vegas is the bomb!

If you're on mixi, there are groups for loads of different games.

Touch

EDIT: DAMMIT, that was supposed to say "touche", but the accented "e" gave me a weird error.

Man, that Kmart deal is super tempting. $320 for the 40GB version...wow.

Thanks for that link, was interesting to read the screenshots.

Ah, FFT. Good luck there, the game's too complex for me even in my native language. Tongue

I took one look at the tutorial and it seems to span about a whole novel's worth of text. My main problem though is the damn thing keeps crashing. Same thing seems to happen with all my backed up PS1 games (except Dragon Warrior VII - thankfully the one I want the most). I don't know whether the problem is the PS1, the discs, the burning system... oh well.

Is anyone getting Dragon Quest IV DS later this month? I'm not savvy enough in my Japanese yet to consider it unfortunately.

I'll implying that you're talking about English? That's awfully odd: the translation was hardly collegiate, but the sheer amount of typos did make comprehension difficult. However, as wzafran said, the text is a good deal more dense than most RPG's, which themselves have plenty of text.

I'm talking about the quantity of it. It's a game you really have to sit down and look at to get the best out of. The long winded explanations are necessary, but still a pain.

Go look up Planescape: Torment: that game has more text than some novels. Of course, then we have visual novels. Lots of fun for everyone!

A bit of thread necromancy here, but if anyone is still poking at FF Tactics in Japanese, I just ran across this complete-looking script. I probably won't get around to working my way through it for a while, but hopefully it will be useful to some of you other classic gamers.

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core is kinda cool (... Ok, so it's the only game I played and beat on my PSP so far, and in Japanese, as a bonus). Wink Most of the time you get to decide when to change to the next line of text, besides in the cut scenes (they are subbed in Japanese, even though it's voiced as well.)

Hey, last week started to play FF VI, but I gave up. I'm not ready for it yet. Gotta finish RTK first or I wont be able to enjoy much the game.

BTW, there are some famous japanese titles that never came out in English. For instance, Megami Tensei series. I wish I could play them someday.

Now if only someone could find a Suikoden 2 script...

Oh, I think this is the script for Final Fantasy 5. I stumbled across it while looking for other stuff(anime scripts, if you know any)http://yupotan.sppd.ne.jp/game/ff5/ff5serif.html

This site might have more of the same kind of stuff, I haven't looked very closely. http://lunar.littlestar.jp/stardust/english/index.html

I also did a quick search and I think this is the (event?)script for Suikoden 1 http://www.geocities.jp/nonotabi033/g1sinario_top.html

Maybe try looking for the game name in Japanese and 台詞集(せりふしゅう) or 全台詞(ぜんせりふ) or 全台詞集(ぜんせりふしゅう). But I have yet to perfect the art of Japanese googling...

Guild Wars Update from today:
Quote:Open Travel: Territory and District UI Changes
(...)
In this update, restrictions to Japanese language districts will be removed and players of all language districts will be able to travel back and forth without restrictions.
In other words, Guild Wars players can now join Japanese districts Smile
It's kinda empty now, oh wait... it's 3am in Japan.

Does guild wars have voice chat? If it does I'm on that like yesterday.

No. Some guilds use Ventrilo etc. but it's not directly supported in the game.

I just bought Rune Factory 2, and it's fun. The Japanese isn't all too difficult either, though I can't understand a lot of it. The game play is OK enough to work out when you don't know 100% what's going on, either.

I'm sure that years ago, before the DS when 逆転裁判 was just a GBA game, I had the script of it. If you can extract text from ROMs, maybe you can get it from there?

I just searched again, and found this:

http://www.aya.or.jp/~kidparty/gyakuten/index.htm

The trouble is, you have to answer 100 questions. It's been ages since I've played it, so I don't think I could answer them all.

The questions seem to be for the second and third games as well.

As soon as I get through RTK1 and get into the grove of doing sentences I'm going to pick up Policenauts. I've been wanting to play this game for nearly a decade and I believe it will be nearly perfect for the task.

I'm sure many of you know of it but Policenauts is considered by many to be Hideo Kojima's (the creator of Metal Gear) masterpiece. It's essentially an interactive graphic novel/point and click adventure. It has a TON of dialog with full Kanji subs and there are several English translation scripts out there. The nature of the game also makes it easy to grab sentences without having to do screen captures or any other such tricks since you generally control the pace of the text because the whole game is pretty much you investigating the objects around you.

And of course the biggest draw is that it's a very adult story line that is supposed to be amazing. It's also got some beautiful old school animation.

Intro video and brief bit of gameplay:

Hoool---y shit. I owe you a Pespsi.

That's my one and only game I've downloaded from the Japanese PSN, and I was starting to have a torrid time.

What's more, I was looking for some manga-esque script to paste into Anki but couldn't find any. This is perfect!
