I have the latest and greatest addition (got it a couple days ago), and I've come upon this kanji (by the new numbering system, it's number 129). But in the book, it's written with 大 as the under kanji, not 犬. Has anyone else noticed this, or is there something funky with my fonts?

New kanji were added to Jouyou in 2010. Some of those use the unsimplified form of the kanji (the form you see on this site). Mr Heisig elected to use simplified forms for those kanji in edition 6.

The Supplement he published before the new edition came out included both forms if you want to take a look.

If you search the forum archives for "Supplement" you'll find a couple discussions about this issue.

嗅 is the correct Kanji. The other character won't be found as a Kanji or a common variation of such. 嗅 was the standard form prior to its addition to the Jyouyou Kanji, and is a simplification of 齅 .

I can see where the variation came from. 臭 was simplified from what is now the right side of 嗅. Also the meaning of 嗅ぐ is the sensation of smelling something with the nose. With smell being 匂 or 臭.

Japanese and Chinese simplified Kanji differently. It isn't your fonts.

Just make sure that you remember that it is 犬 under 自, not 大 and you should be fine.
