Resource question (mini dictionary-ish)

#1
Is there any app that reads a text and creates a index of each word in it along with its definition, creating a mini dictionary of some sort with every word present in that text?

I was looking for something similar to this to finally read some light novels, as its so boring searching words in a big dictionary (though I usually use the sonomama dictionary on the DS for searching Kanjis).

Anyway I wanted to know if anyone is aware of any software of this kind... cause if it doesnt exist yet I might even give it a try and make one myself.

Thanks.

I use yomichan... but was more looking foward to a way to read "physical" books... was planning to print the final output index to use it while reading the book.

Yomichan is awesome, I just wanted to read it not in front of a PC.

Have you seen this thread about cb.Jisho? I haven't used it, but it would seem it generates word frequency lists from Japanese text. I imagine these could be modified and further processed to make the sort of personalized glossary / dictionary file you require.

Good luck with your endeavor. I will be interested to hear how you get on. I have't really got access to a computer at the moment, but one incentive to get one up and running would be to process Japanese text, Like you, I am not sure if applications already exist, or are waiting to be built.

Once you've got a list of words you could import it in to anki and then use the glossing tool to add definitions before exporting it again and printing it off. If cb.Jisho doesn't create word lists I'm pretty sure you can do it with morph man.

Man, thanks for that link... I think that will do it. Will need to try it out first but it does look like a way I could generate such index.

If you have the money for it, an electronic dictionary helps a lot with this kind of thing. Electronic dictionaries will load what you tell them to load in a fraction of a second, and most take less than a second to turn on, so most word look-ups will take less than two seconds if you can type at a reasonable speed.

I was using Sonomama on the DS for kanji when I first moved to Japan, and I used it as an excuse for a long time not to buy an electronic dictionary... but I was so wrong. Looking up things in Sonomama takes forever (mostly because it waits for you to stop writing to look up a word, and then when it does it takes a bit. Electronic dictionaries have a button for you to let it know that you're done typing the kanji).

My electronic dictionary is one of the best things I ever bought for my Japanese learning.
