If it was me, I'd get the manga and read it first... Putting any vocab I don't know in my anki deck.. Then I would go back and watch the anime and understand everything no prob

Mmm of course, and it usually has furigana right? I think you are right. Now I should look for a simple manga if there is such thing.

If you just search for the name of the manga, volume number and "raw" you can often find a direct download for it.

Thank you Hashiriya, that's a useful link; however, I'm not sure if it's against forum rules to post such links. That being said, thanks again, haha. Seems extremely useful.

yup, ...- there is a great site I would like to recommend: animestash
they use soft subs... and in KMPlayer you should be able to view both the japanese and english srt if you manage to find the japanese subs some place. This also helps. Reading japanese AND english.

In my opinion, especially the kanji in Japanese subs increases the comprehensibility a LOT. When you're not so experienced you never really know which kanji is meant, and just seeing the kanji and remembering the meaning is helpful. Furigana makes looking words up somewhat easier eliminating the need to scroll back to hear the pronounciation.
I still prefer (after 1,5 years) watching with Japanese subs, it just is more comfortable and is a good chance to add learn new words in context.
Anyway, it's usually hard to find Japanese subs for shows you'd like to watch. I have more success looking what's available with subs and start from there instead.

I can view the material just fine on my Mac. Are you sure it's downloaded completely yet?

Everything is fine, what I can't do is watch directly on site, but I can download it so it's ok.
