Hey guys, Since a few days ago i started the core2000 in anki, but it just seems way to hard to me. those indivual words are do-able But how aboút the sentence? what are exactly the circumferences for passing a sentence, knowing the word or the whole sentence? if it is the later one it will be hard for me since most of the time i only know lije a few words in the sentence.

I hope you guys can help me me soon.

The sentence is there for context, mostly. It gives you a chance to see how the word is used and with what connotations. Feel free to still pass the review if you know the word but not the sentence.

Hang in there long enough and you will be taken on an amazing journey Wink I suggest studying some grammar points to help you be able to read the sentences.

I did the latter, but not in the standard Core2000 order. I used this deck and sorted them in to RTK order, but if I was doing it now I'd use morphology which will only give you sentences that have one unknown word. (unless it runs out and has to give you one with two)

That being said, it's also fine to do what mcaruso suggested and use the sentence to provide context only. The important thing is to learn the words; do it whichever way is easiest for you.

Don't even try to remember the entire sentence, that's way too many facts per card. I just tried to memorize the highlighted word and if I failed the card I would try to read the example sentence to get a feel for the range of the meaning and/or context. If you keep memorizing new words then eventually you will also remember readings for individual kanji and then you'll notice it becomes easier and easier because then you'll just be memorizing the meaning of the words instead of reading + meaning. As always the key is persistence.

I'd learn all the words and only pass the sentence if you understand it completely.

I agree. All words should be learned, and understanding the words in the context of sentences is advantageous.

For me, the point of core was to learn the words on their own.

The sentence is useful for context but I had it on the back of the card.

I think it's best to test only 1 thing per card, ie. 1 word, or 1 grammar point.

If you have only done RTK so far, I would suggest you to read through Tae Kim, or get a book like Genki or Japanese for Everyone first. Without any knowledge of Basic Grammar it can indeed be difficult to work through such a deck.

While working through Core, you should try to understand the whole sentence, when you first learn it. If you fail to understand the meaning of a sentence during your reviews, but you do know and can read the highlighted words, pass it but rate card hard. If you can't remember the word, fail it. You will work through hundreds of cards, your understanding will grow over time, and you will see your cards so many times, that you will eventually be able to remember everything. So don't worry about not knowing everything right now. Wink

What Core2K deck are you using?

I haven't used the updated Morph Man plugin, but you pretty much say hey, I know these sentences. Then it adds the morphemes from those sentences to it's own known database. Then it adds to a iPlusN field, a count of how many unknowns are in each expression. The cards with the least unknowns are what you want to be focusing on. As those are the sentences with the words you supposedly would have the least difficulty with.

Anyway, when I tried Core 2K, I just used the sentence for context. The vocab word is the most important thing. I never could review solo vocab words in isolation, too many words have the same reading. So I'm not sure if putting the sentence on the back makes sense. I'd put the audio and picture on the back though.

I honestly don't think Core2K is all that important, the sentences themselves are boring. If you find yourself looking for something more interesting/exciting. You could always just jump to sentences from your favorite Anime/Drama (with Subs2SRS), using Morph Man plugin to keep things at your general level.
