Hi Guys,
Iphone 5 information is going to be posted soon in October. I was wondering if anyone knows if it will be coming to Docomo? I only want an iphone because I like the ios version of Anki more then the Android version.
I wonder if they will be unlocked? Or if they dont go to Docomo, will softbank or other carrier's have a unlocked version that is usable on Docomo's network.
Anyone know?

AU are bringing out the iPhone 5 in Nov as SB's exclusive contract is over. I don't know about Docomo though, sorry.

You sure? iirc AU uses a different cell standard, so it would need a different phone, or for the iPhone5 to be a world mode phone

Looks like a rumor to me, but it would be nice to have the extra competition if true.

iPhone 5 is going to KDDI in Japuary and Softbank in October. KDDI made the announcement earlier today and sent softbank shares down 10%.
KDDI gets it later because they have to do some work on their infrastructure before launch.

Save your money and get yourself an Ipod touch now rather than getting caught up in the hysteria round the 5. It is the same IOS platform without the (not always favorably received) telephony, the GPS or the camera. There are a bunch of other neat apps for studying Japanese (if you can sort them out from the cooky-cutter dross), and the selection of on-screen keyboards is also pretty cool. I have the older (non retina) model and it has been worth every penny.

There is no way in hell that Apple will cave to Docomo's demands (some of what they want wouldn't even be allowed as an appstore app, like the imode shopping stuff), so it won't happen until Docomo becomes concerned about customers leaving for competing carriers and gives up.
This is a real threat now that AU offers the iPhone, as many customers stayed away from Softbank due to their reputation of being a scammy company regarding billing issues and their relatively bad network (works fine in Nagoya, but is awful in Tokyo).

Ok, here you go. aitch tee tee pee colon slash slash a en dee ar o...
But seriously, what that page says is that NTT Doromo will start selling the "doromo NEXT series iPhone 5 LTE A-01D" on May 1, which is 9 days ago. But good luck tracking down NTT Doromo, as I believe they are fictitious.

If you want an iPhone so badly, why not just switch to another carrier? You might even save a chunk of money. I'm sticking with Docomo because it's what I've always had and it's what my wife has, but then again, I don't want an iPhone.

Everyone does know that you can use an Iphone on Docomo right now right? Docomo will sell you a sim card that works on unlocked Iphones. The only issue at the moment is that you can't use Docomo's latest Xi data speeds since the current Iphone 4's don't cover those bands but you still get access to FOMA which is faster than anything you are currently getting on your Iphone with Softbank.

Thanks for your help guys! My wife and her family are in a docomo family plan so I am praying for docomo to release iphones someday.
Can you explain what type of Sim card that works on unlocked iphones? What is the japanese word for it? Foma would be great for kaomoji imode emails.
Thanks!

Just go into a Docomo store and ask for a SIM card only plan. You can attach whatever plans you want on to it. You can't get a @docomo.ne.jp email though unfortunately, thats restricted to only Docomo phone plans. The only bit to be a bit cautious about is the access point information which you will need in order to use the data networks. The kicker is that Docomo won't give that info to you so you have to hope the phone auto-detects it. I'd bet 1000yen that there are guides out there for getting iphone to work on Docomo, though they are probably in Japanese.

Nothing happened last year, only the upgraded release of the 4s. I think the new phone will be out this Summer or maybe in the fall of 2012.
