There's a nice resource for the first 1000 words in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish with audio from the book publisher Usborne. This book set is geared toward children, and has colorful illustrations to go along with the words.
If you go to the below link, and type in "first thousand words" in the "FIND YOUR BOOK" text box, it'll take you to a list of books. Near the middle of the list there are a set of "First Thousand Words" links. After selecting the book you're interested in, you can enter a page number (for most of the "First Thousand Words" books, the first page with audio starts on page 4).

The books are organized by themes, so there is a section on things you would find in a home, at toy store, at the beach, and so on. The only drawback to the "First Thousand Words in Japanese" book is that the words are in hiragana and katakana only. If you only use the internet link above, you're stuck with romaji (same type of situation for Arabic, Chinese, and Hebrew).
