OpenSpoon?

Hey there.

I'm sure you've all heard about SilverSpoon and whether or not you agree with Khatz/his price/his ideas I think the basic concept of basically something that provides you with immersion material is good.

I've had this idea in my head for a few days for a website that does something similar (I am not a SilverSpoon member nor do I plan to be so I wouldn't know how similar), but free and community fueled.

Basically it would work like this, there would be several categories (anime, hip hop,pop music, documentaries,manga/comics, articles, comedy, grammar learning material, etc. etc.), that basically anyone can feed with new content. Then you select a few categories and how much material you'd like to have on any given day and it will just basically give you a few select links every day.

Members would also be able to rate content and report invalid/broken links. Then there would probably be a browse database/get random link function for those who don't want it in daily dosages. So it'd basically just be a centralized and neatly ordered link/video database.

What do you think? Would you be interested in something like this? Would you contribute content?

If there's enough interest I should probably be able to whip something up rather quickly.

I think it's a great idea and if carried out well it would be awesome. I think we do have some kind of Google group already for sharing content, but this is a lot more appealing.

As for the name, wouldn't this be more like a "pool" rather than a feeding spoon? Something like KoohiiPool or whatever.

I would sign up and even contribute what I can. I like that idea, and I definitely like open and community driven stuff over paid stuff controlled by a single guy. I'm not great with clever names, maybe Daily Dose or something?

sounds highly illegal. (not that that's a bad thing...) I would base it out of the netherlands ;D

We wouldn't necessarily have to supply the actual content. We could just name the title and let the user get it themselves (via Crunchyroll or whatever legal medium). I expect SilverSpoon works the same way, but I wouldn't know.

Although if you need a Dutch base I could supply my basement. Tongue

And motivational quotes, don't forget the motivational quotes! And articles! Language-related ones — that's what really sets SilverSpoon apart from the rest... maybe. That and telling you to do something then take a break.

In any case, there should be something to make this service more unique and different than the many social bookmarking, title suggestions and reviews that abound on the Internet (let alone the blogs and forums filled with illegal content), and simply offering doses of suggestions wouldn't make it that attractive, I think... What about also including a rating about the level of Japanese required? That seems to be important to many people, as there's always someone asking for something easy, medium or hard (or "Hey, not too rough", "Hurt me plenty" and "Nightmare!", for Doom lovers.) Then, for example, if someone says he wants newbie stuff—by selecting it in a checkbox or something—, all suggested content would be appropriate for him. The only problem would be to make people rate accordingly; well, it's not all roses.

Well first of all yeah, I didn't want to fill this with illegal content. I was thinking just y'know youtube or vimeo embeds, or simply recommendations with short descriptions

I think the brilliant part is in accessibility. Even as someone who doesn't speak japanese (very well) you get easy access to stuff that you are in theory interested in, in japanese. It is similar to something like stumbleupon, except it's exclusively japanese content, with descriptions you can understand.

If something like this/similar to this exists already I am unaware of it.

I do like the idea of a fluency grading. A movie like, say, hancock or 河童のクゥと夏休み you can enjoy without really understanding a single word, a movie like good will hunting with lots of talking being the focus? Not so much.

I had actually thought of this in the past. Sort of a reddit/digg, but only for Japanese content, and only with English descriptions. Anything else gets deleted. The community can then vote up anything they like. (Downvotes would probably be harmful, at least at first.)

I'm not suggesting it should have illegal content, but if some did happen to find its way onto the site then it could use a unique naming system or tag. Then if somebody happened to upload a file with that name to a free filehosting site, it would be as easy to find as a Google search. Also maybe a field that mentions if it's currently available or not.
