How do you keep track of the vocabulary that you stumble upon while reading the web? For example, when I read Wikipedia and I find new kanji/vocabulary or whatever I save the dictionary entry for that kanji/vocab in my favorites. Wondering if any of you had a better method.

Do you mean other dictionaries from Japanese to non-English? This page will pop up once you've installed: http://rikaichan.mozdev.org/getdic2.html

Not sure about Japanese to Spanish for Rikaisan, Stardict, or Lingoes (those are other popup dictionaries with save functions).

I couldn't do it without you a few seconds after me, ready to add a “.” to punctuate my comments. ^_^

It's nothing terribly special. The SQLite thing is just an excuse to learn how to use the SQLite library (never had a reason to use it before).

Basically i just save every word i look up in rikaichan without caring whether the word is common or not. The rikaichan save file gets fed into the script which adds the words to the database if they don't already exist and increments a "number of times seen" count if they're already in there. When i want to add words to anki, i tell the script how many i want and it'll give me the X most frequently seen words that i haven't already got in anki.

Simple concept, but i've found it pretty useful. There have been many words i have looked up and gone "man, what a random word, i'll never need that" only to find i've actually seen it 3 times over the past 6 months and forgotten about it. Conversely it filters out a *lot* of words that seemed useful at the time but turn out to be not that common.

Use rikaichan's 's' button to save the word and definition to a text file, or write the words into a wordlist as you find them. If you going the anki route, you can then easily import the text file into anki. I just write the words straight into a wordlist in a notebook. Simple is best.

I don't keep track of words because reality does it for me. If a word is important enough for me to remember then it will be reinforced in the movies/video games/books/reality I am exposing myself to. Though, I do have the luxury of living in Japan.

Not quite what you were looking for, but some kind soul wrote Learning with Texts. Direct link to the usage screencast.

Better method? I just write it down on a piece of paper, and mark it is a dictionary. I also use goo dictionary plug-in for Firefox. It automatically saves words in the dictionary history. However, my method is paper and pen.

At work: Rikaichan it to a file for batch import into Anki later
On the go: Bookmark it in the iPhone dictionary I use to type into a text file & Rikaichan later.
At home: screw it, do nothing
