Learn to READ japanese by playing visual novels or watching Anime.

All I've done is combine RTK with a text-extraction tool: (that has been mentioned before in older threads) 'ITH' so that you can add Anki entries from your favourite media.
This works with Jdramas and movies as well and basically anything with Japanese subtitles (simpsons or something). Doing it this way is much more fun and more interesting than drilling through thousands of model sentences.

I tried some VNs a little while ago and found that most of them required me to use applocale (which can't be used in conjunction with the text hooker), even though I had changed the language settings on my computer. Did you ever have this problem. I don't think I really like VNs anyway, but I figured I'd ask in case you knew an easy fix.

One suggestion for your site would be to have a uniform colour behind the text, to make it easier to read.

Did you set the "Language for non-Unicode programs" to Japanese? I haven't had any problems with VNs, or any japanese software after I did that.

I was looking at キラ☆キラ and うたかた空 on the iPhone, but the free versions at least don't have sound. They nicely come up in Japanese text, but they describe themselves as English applications... I think キラ☆キラ has voices in the paid version and that うたかった空 doesn't have voices in any case. I'm a bit concerned about paying and then finding out I have Japanese text and English voices or no voices.

In any case, my question is whether or not anyone knows of fully-voiced in Japanese visual novels for the iPhone available from the American store. (I may have to look into getting an iTunes card and activating the Japanese store.) In particular, visual novels that are not considered erotic novels... adventure or mystery stories or suchlike.

Possibly also for the PC, but there I'm concerned about region locks and other such hazards (plus the cost tends to be much higher, although perhaps visual novels as old as those now being ported to the iPhone would also be cheap on the PC.)

Also, I think subs2srs would be better if you're doing anime, since it takes everything from the subtitle file (better if you're a beginner and would be adding them all anyway) and can also export audio and images or video, which is hugely helpful for listening and context. But this guide is really helpful for visual novels. If only I could find some (non エロゲ) that can hold my interest.

I suppose I have been unknowingly following ''your'' method. I first completed the core 2k before I even attempted to read anything outside of my SrS though, and even that was kind of a frustrating experience. I did not really gain any sort of fluency at reading untill I had remembered around 10 k words in my SrS though.

Sorry, I didn't see your reply before. Yeah I did that but it still doesn't work. Nevermind, I can still play them without the lookups.
