Excited about Heisig!

#1
Hello lovely members of RTK forums!
My name is Maria and I just started the volume one! I already think it's working like a charm. I only learned about...34 kanji, but I can remember them all really well. Gall bladder was a little different since I had a hard time coming up with a story that would work for me, but the site helped me with that! Woot!
Anyway, I'm seventeen, have been interested in Japanese for a while, and learned hiragana and a few words when I was a freshman thanks to my Japanese best friend, but sorta drifted from learning more.

Still, I'm back and super excited to be here. If you guys have any suggestions, motivations, or warnings in learning Japanese/taking on heisig, please let me know!

Much love,
Maria

That feel when you get past frame 500 only to find Heisig rickrolls you and gets lazy with 3 letter word stories that aren't really helpful. That feel when you have to resort to Revrtk for the rest of the kanji. That feel when you feel like giving up.

OP I would look into this before reaching that conclusion.

Yeh it does start off fun, but it starts getting hard around the "fiesta" primitive. Don't worry though, stick at it and it gets easier from frame 1000 onwards.

The satisfaction of completing the book is immense!

Good luck, it's quite a journey to get through.

I do have a few suggestions for what worked for me. Obviously your going to have to find what works for you.

Don't worry about learning all of the kanji. If you have lots of trouble remembering a particular kanji, just skip it. You can always come back to it much later if needed.

There is a smaller set named RTK Lite, which focuses on the most common kanji, that is about half the length, something to consider if you feel things are going too slow.

Also, since you know Hiragana, I highly recommend a Japanese keyword along with the English Keywords. This helps a lot if you start to mix similar keywords up. (Just for example: I=吾, oneself=自, self=己.)
