A question about AnkiDroid

#1
Hey guys. I'm considering buying an android phone, mainly to be able to review with Anki on the go. Is it possible to do your reps offline and then only sync at home over wi-fi? I checked the Anki site and forums and tried googling around but couldn't find the answer. I'm pretty sure you should be able to do that but I really want to be on the safe side and make sure before I go and spend money Smile

Yes, it is possible. I have a Samsung Galaxy SII and Ankidroid works like a charm (well, there are some ocasional crashes, but same thing happens on the PC).

Yes, that's precisely how it works Wink Any particular phone you've got in mind?

Hyperborea Wrote:You are going to have to be prepared to root your Android device though. The stock device in many markets doesn't have a Japanese font installed and you will get Simplified Chinese glyphs instead. So, you will need to root it and install a font - probably best to just install the Motoya fonts that are part of the basic Android system but not included in many vendors devices.
Rooting is not necessary for AnkiDroid: http://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/wiki/...ustomFonts

Other apps are a different story though...

Thanks a lot, that's good news Smile I'm not very keen on the idea of rooting my phone right after I buy it, as you lose your warranty then (from what I've heard)...

Right now I'm considering LG P500 Swift Plus, I think it's also known as Optimus One. I don't need anything fancy. Mostly want it for reviewing so I wanted something not too expensive. Was also thinking about Samsung Ace, the price is similar but I don't know... I'm not convinced. Any experience with any of these, anyone?

I'm not at all against rooting the phone... but if you don't want to, you can download the Motoya fonts to many Android phones without rooting.
On my Samsung Galaxy tablet, when you go to Settings, Display Settings, Font Style, there is a list of pre-installed fonts that you can use for your system font. There is also a box down the bottom that says "Get Fonts Online". You could, no doubt, check for this in the shop before you buy, even if you buy elsewhere. I only have experience with my phone, but I expect that the presence of this option indicates that the phone is compatible with the app called " fontomiser or galaxy fonts" https://market.android.com/details?id=co...ntomizerSP

In addition check Option, Applications... There should then be an option at the top to tick, to allow Unknown sources, ie non-market apps. Most phones seem to have this, but not all. Looking at the feedback the guy has received for his app, if you dig deep enough you will see some comments about success with non Samsung phones, but checking your menus, as above, to see if you have what the writer of the app called 'flipfont library', may well be your best best.
As mentioned by others, if you want to choose any font, including Japanese, in Ankidroid, you don't need any of this. But once you have changed your system font it will, of course, work with all apps Including English language ones. And it is very quick to switch back/switch between different system fonts, once they are installed.
Good luck

Hi chillimuffin,

Yes, it is possible to do your repetitions offline and then only sync at home over WiFi.

Any Android device will do for AnkiDroid.
(exception: right now there is a small problem with Amazon devices but that should be solved in a month or two)

So if your goal is to review in the train without wasting money on a phone contract, just buy a cheap used Android device on eBay or get one for free from a friend who upgraded, and enjoy! :-)

cb4960 and rachels are right, you can install custom fonts for AnkiDroid on any Android phone, without rooting.

Cheers!

Sounds great, thank you all! Nicolas, I'm afraid I don't have any friends who would wilfully part with an Android phone for free (although I really wish I did Smile) so I'll probably just buy the LG. Cheers!
