Is it just me or has japan become more racist recently?

Other than Neighbours (is that still going?), It's the only foreign media we get, blargh.
What do you mean! We also have Home and Away! Another excellent Australian soap Tongue

I agree with Hyperborea's point about protectionism.

Following what Hashiraya and six8ten said about food, I agrre there are some odd ideas of foreign eating habits floating around. I was staying in a hotel once and, once we'd got past the "OMG you can speak Japanese and USE CHOPSTICKS!!" part of the conversation, the lady who was serving our food asked me if I'd like my rice in a bowl or if it would be easier to eat from a plate. It was hard not to burst out laughing...

i do this because アメリカ is the US, though i try to avoid it.

just like i try avoiding 外国人 and instead try to say 日本人じゃない人

since i'm filipino but not obviously filipino, i get everyone talking their own language to me. it's kinda annoying because i have to tell people that i only understand english, but at least i can avoid racism in asia or asian-oriented (no pun intended) districts like that.

when i went to japan last year i got stopped by cops at the train station twice, but i don't think it was apparent that i was foreign since i had to clarify that i couldn't speak japanese (or rather, didn't want to try). perhaps i just look suspicious. =)

Some (Japanese) told me that a lot of Japanese media is Korean-owned, but I don't know how valid that is. It would go towards explaining how the dire dramas and music make it onto TV though. Don't suppose anybody knows anything about this?

As for the Italian kid, I wouldn't doubt there's an element of paedo-complex in the comments of the freaks who were talking about beating him up. I remember hearing a story about a 漫画家 being attacked by a fan because he made one of his young girl characters out to be a non-virgin. When it comes to women, these sort of guys would struggle to compete with an eight-year-old Italian kid in the real world, so I guess they have a lot to be bitter about.

Just look at the comments by Americans for YouTube videos of the tsunami coverage. If YouTube comments represent a nation, then the world must be pretty crappy.

oh and I read this whole conspiracy theory about kpop. basically fuji has broadcasting rights (they're a tv channel) and they have music rights (one of the their sub companies is connected to some kpop company??) so that's why there's so much korean crap all of a sudden beauset they want the music to sell so they can make more $$ money.... usually companies aren't legally allowed to have rights to music and tv at the same time (like it's illegal in the US)... because they would only promote their music they want to profit off of.

I read this somewhere online.. .2-ch thing. so if somebody googles this in japanes you'll find it. and I can't' right now cause I'm on a computer that doesn't have japanese on it Sad

never mind here's the dirt:
地方テレビ局勤務というブロガーは、そのブログ「ニセモノの良心」で、視聴率を取らないとCMを
確保できないが、広告収入減でテレビ局に十分な番組制作費がないと指摘。韓国ドラマは購入費用が
安いのにもかかわらず、視聴率をある程度稼げるという事情を説明している。

The thing wtih the kpop thing though works out for both sides as far as profit... since Japan is a bigger market than korea (japan is like #2 market for music and korea is #18-ish and USA is #1), and Fuji the tv network profits it from too. but for the ppl who dont like kpop it's bad news.

I personally don't see bragging about your country's media being full of foreign content as something racist. I mean, actors need to work, specially in countries where they dont earn nearly as much money as northamerican actors do.
Over here in my country (Argentina) we now got this law that controls how much foreign content a channel can show and I find it quite appropriate to be honest. Really, many of our talented actors are unemployed because of terrible worldknown actors taking too much time in the screens.
Nonetheless we still welcome every foreigner (we have almost no immigratory restrictions) to work in here so that our country can be a bigger, more culturally diverse country. Although we still have plenty of idiots talking shit about bolivians or peruvians stealing our jobs (this doesn't seem to happen when we're talking about americans or europeans though, then they would go suck their cocks).
What I mean is NEVER misunderstand protectionism with racism. Protectionism is the only mean for many underdeveloped countrys to avoid massive unemployment. Racism on the other hand is but the supersticious belief in a RACE being superior to others.
And as for the USA being a free country, or a nonracist one... I would advise you guys to look at how many mexicans get killed every year for trying to cross the frontier. Or take a look to all the wars where you might not lose what some americans think is real freedom (which strictly speaking is but the freedom the huge echonomic powers are willing to give you, so it's not really freedom at all but it's counterpart) but in which the USA kills people (the american gobernment killing Osama Bin Laden without having to give any explications, any sort of trial or anything to the man, etc. is just ridiculous), takes control over other countries, and steals their resources.
All in all I think even what i've seen in the japanese media it's not less than what i've seen in the north american media in terms of racism.
I mean, if you look like you're from some middle eastern country they've got the right to stop you for hours and hours in an airport? how humilliating is that?

It's really hard to speak in a foreign language as english about such delicate matters, I hope I've not offended anyone here, it was never my intention. Not all americans are their gobernment or their sadistic monopolistic companies.

I wouldn't be surprised.

A lot of Japanese media is Christian owned, even though Japan's Christian population is miniscule. Look at Korea, it's spamming with Christians all over the place - perhaps there's a connection.

Dude, get a life. Are you seriously going to quote a racist from 2channel to back up your point? That and your atrocious writing make you look like a very sad troll.

I have Japanese TV on about 14 hours a day most weekdays, and almost never come across programming in Korean. I know they show a fair amount of Korean dramas on the BS channels, but on the 地デジ channels, there's close to none. Occasionally there'll be coverage on a K-pop group like KARA or SNSD, who have millions of Japanese fans. Is there something wrong with showing Japanese viewers what they want to see?

If you are going to go into a rage from seeing something Korean on TV, then that's your own personal issue, not an issue with Japanese TV.

How is this "dirt?" TV stations aren't making enough money off advertising, so they're showing less expensive programming that will still bring in viewers. Makes sense to me. This is no conspiracy theory.

I don't know if Japan has become more racist or not but if you look at any video dealing with racial issues on youtube you will see a barrage of racist comments regardless of the country. Youtube seems to bring out the worst in people.

Fuji TV has the right to broadcast whatever they like as long as they're not breaking any rules or regulations. Maybe Fuji TV sees Korean programming as a profitable niche market. Maybe Fuji TV is part of an elaborate Korean anti-japan conspiracy. Either way if you don't like Fuji TV, don't watch it.

Wait, hold on. Isn't it a GOOD thing that a country broadcasts foreign TV shows???

I've seen American shows, Korean shows, Taiwanese and Chinese shows on Japanese TV. I think that's a great thing, it gives people a broader view.

I WISH American TV would broadcast foreign shows......when was the last time you saw a Japanese drama on American TV huh??
