Hey folks,

there are a few things that have started buggering me really in the last time when it came to type in Japanese. I'm using the Google IME, which is great on the whole, but does anyone know how to switch off this "Alt + (tilde)" for writing in kana? I never use the other, how is it called, "direct mode" (?) and switch back to my German keyboard I am very used to.
My second question is, if there is a possibility of turning the Windows button/key on the keyboard into a "language switch" key. I have seen a Japanese Mac Book that had such a key and switching between languages was just a charm~

I know that, but after pressing these, I always additionally need to press "Alt + ^" in order to type Japanese, which annoys me. I want to press only one key to type immediately in Japanese. How's that realisable on Windows 7? Any ideas?

i don't know about windows 7, but try clicking on JP, show language bar, click on down arrow, settings, advanced key settings, then you can change it...

(I hope this setting is not just unique to my computer... i don't think think i mesesd with the setting)

For windows 7 to change the keyboard just press ALT + Shift !

I understood already how to change languages on Win7, but that's my problem:

So you want your Japanese to start at kana input for default instead of half-width latin. I kinda wonder about that too, but I gave up and accepted alt+~.

Regarding how to turn the windows button on the keyboard into a language switch key, it is possible. I did something similar to my right alt key.

You can use the program Sharpkeys ( http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/ ) to remap the key to something else such as "F13" (because you probably dont have an F13 key on your keyboard) and then in the IME settings set it up so that "F13" switches the mode.

@Zarxrax: Could you write a little more in detail how you did that with your windows button...?

Well first, remap with Sharpkeys. On the left hand side when you run it, just press the "type key" button, then press the button that you wanna remap (in this case, your windows key). It will become selected in the list. Then in the right side, choose something to remap it to. I found that F13 worked well for me, since google ime lets you map things to that button.

Then in the google input settings, go to the customize keys area, find all the ones that are "activate ime" or "deactivate ime", and set them to F13. Then you press your windows key, and it toggles the ime on and off.
