面白い...

If I say 面白い enough times, another season of ガリレオ will be released.

I think I figured out a better way to phrase my question.

Based on this: 聴かせてほしい, my first impression was that the context was listening to music, a voice, that sort of thing, and thus stuff that you could translate to a sense of telling or asking would more likely be written with 聞かせて instead, and thus I didn't think it likely you could infer that kind of interpretation/context from the fragment given in the OP.

I think I got confused trying to work in the てほしい and http://nlpwww.nict.go.jp/wn-ja/cgi/wn-sy...00785008-v

So you're saying that in your experience you could just as easily expect 聴 to be used to refer to the same things (not sure how to classify it... content rather than form? The style of listening/hearing?) as 聞く?

All the sources I have looked at say that 聞く is used for all the meanings, and 聴く can be used for a certain subset of the "listen" meanings. 訊く can technically be used for "ask" but it's relatively rare.

I don't think it's safe to assume that people will make sure they *don't* use 聞く for anything that might be covered by 聴く instead. Some might, but I don't think everyone does. 名曲を聴く is about twice as popular as 名曲を聞く according to google, but the latter is definitely used.

Another example that I had a hard time understanding:

別れるときに会って話をして納得させて欲しい、と思う気持ちは女性の方が強い傾向があります。

Who wants to convince whom?

Usually the female wants some reassurance, according to that sentence.
