I posted in a thread recently about my idea for a Japanese fansubbing group but as someone kindly pointed out to me, "楽天" isn't exactly the most copyright-friendly name to come up with :p

So I decided to start up a group to try and generate more Japanese subtitles. You're welcome to make any suggestions here:

That being said, if you could help in making transcripts or submit them, I can begin to work on doing all of the timing matters.

Baka Neko Subs is still in development but I'm hoping with more members we can start to get the ball rolling

That group doesn't exist anymore and the last time they actually released any subtitles was a couple of years ago, so I figured the name was up for the taking.

So basically you are starting your own group, but you don't yet have anyone do to the transcriptions?

aren't most j-subs already broadcast by the tv stations and downloadable on release? that's why it's been 2357903750293x easier nowadays for english releases to come out because all they have to do is timing, which is super easy anyway since they just do minor adjustments for commercial scenes.

that's how it is in the jdrama scene, as long as some dude captures the subs when it's aired then everything gets subbed super fast. i don't think anyone makes their own transcripts anymore.

For anime, they do their own timing.
The translator does the line-by-line text. Just a list of translated lines.
The timer copies the lines into the timings.
The encoder combines a raw video and the subtitle into a finished file.
After that, the QC steps happen, if there are any. The result is the release you see.

I would like to see fansub groups put the Jap captions in their releases. It would not be that much extra work. Maybe there is some reason they don't do it.

2) People to make subtitles in their 2nd language...not to sound rude, but kind of sounds like the blind leading the blind.

But yeah, if you were doing subtitles for current shows, you could do it by finding someone who can grab them off the streams like they do in the drama community -- but someone might already be doing that.

For some series we might be lucky enough to find transcriptions online. If not, the only choice we would have left is to come up with our own. Not to sound cheesy but if we work together I'm pretty sure we can accomplish anything

I don't see what the problem is. Baka Neko Subs *did* exist, but the website it uses (bakanekosubs.com) is linked to "Water Damage Los Angeles." Honestly, I don't see how people would mix up the two since the other group hasn't released any subtitles in 4 years.

Even still, if you don't like the name then there's not much I can do. I'm not starting a new website because people aren't fond of the name o_o

You would be surprised how easy transcribing can be, especially if we have other subtitles to guide our listening efforts. Also, the more people we have working on anything, the less likely we'll have mistakes.

Well, yes, but I was also thinking of projects for other anime/shows/movies that we couldn't just rip the subs for. For example, I've just finished the fifth episode of Evangelion and I promise you you'd be hard up to find actual Japanese subs anywhere on the Net.

Even still, the subs that they'd be able to release would be for shows that people aren't necessarily interested in. This is my biggest problem with kitsunekko--I really appreciate it what it's doing but some of the shows on there aren't really my taste. We could also do exact subs for dubbed shows and movies, which are also rather rare since the Japanese subtitles were created for watching with the English version...

Essentially I wanted to make Baka Neko as a complement to kitsunekko but more community-driven. I don't think anyone can disagree with me that Japanese subtitles are *the* way to improve listening and reading skills in Japanese (+SRS naturally), so why not help out?

Even if they gave up, you don't steal peoples' names. What if they decide to start up again? What if their fans come after you with pitchforks for profaning the name of their favorite subtitle group? What if some company decides to sue them for something they did, and they end up suing you?

Don't steal names. It's not ethical, it's not cool, and it's not worth it.

There is a big difference between scripts and subtitles... I think the point is to find these scripts and make them into subtitles. Or create scripts and make subtitles of them.

I know there's a difference OP was asking before for volunteers to make transcripts so I assumed s/he was making transcripts and then subs. Hence the usefullness of a website with a bunch of scripts
