Finished the sample and can't get the book - what now?

#1
Hi everyone. This is my first post.

I finished the online "Remembering the Kanji" free sample last night, which has taught me around 275 kanji over the course of the last few days. Of course I went straight to Amazon to buy the whole thing but they can't dispatch it for at least 4 weeks. I ordered it off Waterstones.co.uk but have now been told they don't have it, and eBay doesn't even have 1 copy up for auction! It seems I might have to wait a little so I was wondering what I could do before then. Obviously I'll continue to use this great site to revise the few kanji I've learned and will try to boost my grammar, but perhaps I could do more like learning the readings for these kanji? Would that be a good idea or would it go against Heisig's method, to learn the pronunciations at this early stage?

ありがとう!

I don't know if it's viable, but you should be able to just order it from the US Amazon site, since it's in stock, and foot the extra bill for international shipping.

If you're also pretty imaginative and good you can always just add the kanji from this website and use the keywords/kanji while making your own stories.

If there is a reasonably sized university nearby, you might try looking at their bookstore. I got some relatively hard to find Japanese grammar dictionaries at one. (Dictionary of Basic/Intermediate Japanese Grammar)

I think you can order it directly from the publisher as well.

That you can, right here. It looks like they ship worldwide.

I live in the UK and I ordered it at the beginning of June for about ?20 off amazon, its going for even cheaper now. It came in under a week. I'm pretty sure yours should too. I know it says should be dispatched in 4 to 6 weeks but I think thats more of a disclaimer cause it sure didn't take that long for me. I checked the reviews of the suppliers just know and although there are only 5 they are all pretty good and most say it was fast.

Oh, I was about to say that you don't really need the book: you should be able to figure out the primitives of a kanji by, well, looking at it and thus make your own story. The only problem with this is when new primitives are introduced, but the community stories would probably help you through that as well.

Or you could just buy the thing: Heisig certainly deserves the money.

I was in this situation before when I myself had finished the sample and didn't have the book. I decided to apply the method acquired from Heisig and worked my way through the general-use characters with a Henshall guide transcribing the remainder of the general use kanji; I reordered it into an order that suited my memory which is completely different to Heisig. As for the extra 98 to get the 2042 and get back on the boat with everyone on the site, there is a list of non-general use somewhere on the forum.

I'm on RTK3 now and I've finished the major primitives part of the book (2106-2845) even though I don't have the book since you can download RTK3 flash cards. Also, this site covers the 3007 kanji and there are stories and ideas if you get stuck on the study section.
