haha. I guess I should have said near native-level. (I guess when I think about it, I probably won't say I've reached native-level ever, even if I ever do reach it. It's just a dangerous word to use. I'll stick with fluency or advanced from now on.

true. I asked him what he did exactly and he said: "I hanged out with a lot of people who speak mandarin(native) and when I got home: I immersed ,read, write, practiced speaking and the next day I did the same thing). He was a student at that time and he had plenty of time(I know where he's coming from, I have loads of time. So I better not waste it). I guess there isn't really a means to measure it.

kitakitsune Wrote:It's certainly possible to become better at a foreign language compared to a native. I know plenty of foreigners in Japan who's Japanese abilities are flawless. Reading, writing, and speaking, all better than most university graduates.

The part where they get moved down a notch is the understanding of the local culture that takes tens of years to soak up. Specifically things like religion and all the other many tiny cultural details you learn by simply being raised in Japan...
Those things I can understand, it's just something you need to exposed to by living there for a bit. But overall language ability, I definitely think one can achieve at least near-native level fluency.

And I'm getting purdy good at nihongo myself. So I'm an expert.
I'm not expert, so I can't really say I'm amazing. But the best way to know is by what you can do, taking proficiency tests, ask natives or just being able to do the things native do.

Side note: I was counting how long I've been learning Japanese(not counting 1 course I took and RTK1+3). I'm at 21 months actually. Because once it reaches September, I'll be at the 2 year mark.
