When I first saw this I thought you meant "buta ni shinju", as in why do you want really good dramas if you can't understand anything. Wink

i had so many facepalm moments in that show because it was soooo bad.

but i still love ueto aya. =)

women as main characters?

if you like crime dramas, there's Boss and 交渉人
almost anything with ayase haruka is good, JIN, MR. Brain, that one show where she's a slob at home but i forgot the name
liar game has toda erika
ueto aya's pretty hot in nagareboshi
tsuki no koibito is... not that great but shinohara ryoko is pretty hot especially in terms of speaking, however you have to put up with Lin Chi Ling's heavily chinese-accented japanese
there's sailor moon. lol.

how did nobody mention 大切なことはすべて君が教えてくれた yet! probably my favorite drama. i'm in love with the soundtrack and the cast is pretty awesome.
Hotaru no Hikaru 1&2 is great too. First season doesn't have jp subtitles though Sad Mother has been mentioned already, gotta agree it's amazing! Same with Nagareboshi (except for the annoying brother).

looking for more *really good* dramas with jp-subtitles now. can anyone recommend any without too many facepalm-moments? I watched the first episode of 名前をなくした女神 which was full of awkward scenes & way too predictable. I dont think i can handle that despite the good cast, not after Mother. also tried GOLD, 日本人の知らない日本語 & 生まれる which were not much better in that aspect. Big Grin

I loved 名前なくした女神! For me the way the mothers changed throughout was not predictable at all. I found it easy to relate to as well, ママ友 is not something I look forward to... I disliked Hotaru no Hikari though, for me that was full of cringe and facepalm.

There's a set of three murder mystery specials with jp subs (d-addicts) that has just finished.

hmm, I guess 名前なくした女神 is just not for me. But then again it was only the first episode so I might give it another try sometime later.

I checked out 美しい隣人 yesterday which seems to be interesting, will watch more episodes when i'm done srs'ing Last Friends (its great so far!). ty pudding & caivano Smile

It depends what you mean by *really good* Wink from the japanese subtitles list, Innocent Love is interesting and a little strange but cheesy. massugu no otoko is not so cheesy but not so gripping but quite good in a quite good kinda way. School!! I haven't watched but some of my friends said is good so should be worth checking out. Saito san is also good and not cheesy. Buzzer Beat is your usual cheesy but fairly decent sports drama with a few love stories thrown in. That's about all the ones I've watched I think!

its hard to define since none of these dramas are flawless, but they are certainly more entertaining than core 2k Smile I pretty much ignore all non-jp subbed ones and focus on the ones with jp-.srt + EN soft subs that are easily srs'able.

thanks for all the recommendations! different genres are always welcome.

oh and I just found out about the ~50ep long historical taiga dramas. Gou looks promising.

do they use a lot of ancient japanese in these taigas? just curious if there's anything to watch out for.

名前なくした女神 is AWESOME! I love this kind of dramas! I really like to watch this kind of parents|children relationship because myself didn't really have that kind of thing though my life and it feels good to watch it.
I've watched the episodes with and without japanese subs, and its way easier to understand without the subs, I will mainly use them to vocab learning.

I'm going to watch the last 3 episodes tonight! Can't wait! Big Grin

Anyone know of any drama like "anego"?

仁 - Jin

My Korean friend recommended it to me the other day. There is Season 1 and 2. I've only watched a couple of episodes from Season 1 but it's really really good. Without giving too much away has has a bit to do with 江戸時代 so some of the speech can be hard to understand, so I definitely recommend subtitles (Japanese or other)

How do you srs it? What I do is look up new words in a dictionary and the sentence where it appears to anki, I also record the audio from the drama). Is there an easier and faster way to do it?

I paste the .srt text into http://translate.google.com (ignore the translation) and use rikaichan to copy the definitions into my subs2srs anki-deck. it's still kinda slow but yea. I wish there was an anki rikaichan plugin that would take care of all vocab that contains kanji Smile

This thread is awesome! I'm testing out Subs2SRS/dramas/making audio cards and was wondering for some good dramas.

So far downloading zettai kareshi and 1 litre of tears.

I'm mostly a shoujou gal, so also looking at 名前なくした女神 and 大切なことはすべて君が教えてくれた.

I want to recommend 勇者ヨシヒコと魔王の城. It's currently airing and has no subs but it's hilarious! It's based on Dragon Quest style rpgs so if you like them you should definitely try it Smile

Just watched my first drama and I even though I don't know if it's a "good" one (cause I have no references) I can definitely guarantee you I had a great time watching it! Nice story and awesome characters and it made me laugh out loud atleast once in every episode (rare!)!
Hanazakiri no Kimitachi e (Hana Kimi for short)!

I loved it too but from the first ep i wasn't sure if it was gonna get that good since they had some dumb parts (fan-servicey with the ikemen). But as I watched i just grew to love it more and more.

I just finished watching 泣かないと決めた日。It's available on D-Addicts with Japanese subs. The level is appropriate for those around JLPT 3/2. Anyway, it's one of those typical office dramas in which a new employee is bullied and then struggles on to gain the acceptance of her coworkers. However, it differs from the norm in how serious and dark the tone is. If you dislike cheesy dramas, then this is a good show to watch. There definitely are cheesy moments (usually long, heartfelt speeches), but they're few and far between.

To anybody who wants to watch Hana Kimi, watch the older version with Horkita Maki. The 2011 version is atrocious and just copies everything from the previous one but it's terrible.

Yankee-kun to Megane-chan is great fun and has Japanese Subtitles available for all ten episodes.

If you can find 'Antique' (or is it La Patissiere Antique?) that was fun and a little different, although the final episode was anticlimactic for me, the journey was great.

Also I'll echo Nodame no Cantabile and Hotaru no Hikari as great dramas (not so much Hotaru2, which was enjoyable but not great.) I believe Japanese subtitles are available for both of them, they are widely recommended dramas.

Of the currently airing dramas, I highly recommend 'Ikemen desu ne'. It's very understandable and very well acted, and has more complexity to the plot than -just- the love triangle, though it does have that too. I don't think Japanese subs are available yet.

(Of course, I also think you only need a handful of dramas with Japanese subs anyway.)

I also have to admit that I'm enjoying Arakawa Under the Bridge a whole lot, but I can't recommend it to anyone looking for language practice as it's chock full of eccentric characters with eccentric speech...
