Genshiken explains hentai.

Nothing bad here, but found this randomly today on YouTube. (Again, I hope no one takes this the wrong way or anything. Just random fun)

One of my favourite animes. Pretty accurately depicted the anime society at my last university Wink

Pretty funny and good "slice of life" look at the what 3rd year of college is like for the Japanese. Starting to look for a job so early with so much pressure seems quite scary / stressful!

Just started watching it today actually, only on episode 3. But so far it's nice. I agree with when you say a good "slice of life". Haha, this is ironic I'm in my third year. Although it's nothing like this

One of my favorites series and favorite scenes from the anime Big Grin. Its a rarity in the vast anime/manga cosmos. So much stuff is done in high school, so have a series that focuses on a bit of life in college is RARE. Season 1 is an awesome intro to the 'real' otaku culture in Japan. Season 2 is more run of the mill slice of life and slipped away from focusing on the otaku bits, which I liked, though you do get an intro to BL *sigh*. I was distraught when the series had ended......but then.....on the mountain side! What is that?! A ray of hope!! The Genshiken manga has restarted.

I think the reason why the series turned out so well was because the series was literally modeled on an actual club at university. I could almost believe they had a crazy name like Genshiken. Either way, great series.

Doesn't everyone look for a job in the 3rd year of college no matter where you are?

I know in England anyone looking for a good corporate job has to do that...

If you want to enter a graduate program (that includes training) it's an advantage to start early - but there are still plenty of graduate programs and jobs to apply for afterwards. Also you can apply for graduate or junior jobs pretty much indefinitely.

In Japan it seems like you start applying for jobs as soon as your 3rd year starts, and you accept before your final exams. The big difference is, it seems if you miss out on getting a corporate job at this period, you can't apply again - you're screwed for life. In げんしけん several students take jobs they dont want to do simply because they have to accept a job at this stage. Huge pressure.

Ask your girlfriend, she'll know more. Or watch this anime!

Yeah I've seen the anime. There are a lot of 就職浪人 I think though... they must find jobs at smaller companies eventually. My girlfriend herself is one so I best not bring it up. Tongue I don't think she's bothered about working a corporate job anyway though.

If by "3rd year" you mean "last year", then yes. Engineering here is a 4 year degree, but the deadlines for all the grad positions for the following year are very early in the year, so most people have lined up a job by the time they're half way through their final year.

Well, penultimate year if you're looking for internships, final year for full time, is what I meant, yeah.
