Hey folks,

I read in this source here (http://www.integratedlanguages.com/uploa...k_3934.pdf) on page 73 about the so caleld Renyoukei forms. I stumble across many words like 飛び出す, 思い出す and so on these days, so I was asking myself if there is a list, sorted after frequency, containing these words.. Any suggestions/help?

I vaguely recall an appendix to one of the Dictionaries of Japanese Grammar having a list of compound verbs. (Probably the Basic one. I don't have the books with me at the moment to check.)

Just checked. It's the Intermediate one, Appendix 2.

@Tori The "Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar" is a printed book, but some crafty people may be able to find a PDF.XD

To clear up a minor point of terminology: renyoukei is just the form of the verb sometimes called the "masu stem"; you don't need a list of those, every verb has one. The verbs like 飛び出す and 思い出す are compound verbs, 複合動詞. Possibly you'll have more luck finding a list with those as search terms, I dunno.

I would make a distinction between two cases here. In one set the V2 in V1V2 has a generally predictable effect on the meaning of V1, and can usually be used with a wide range of V1. Particularly if you really can use it with any V1, these often turn up as "grammar"; eg ~はじめる、 ~おわる、 ~きれる. The second set is words where really the V1V2 combination just has to be treated as its own word with its own meaning which can't be deduced purely from the meanings of V1 and V2; 落ち着く is one example, as is 思い出す.

I'd tend to suggest that the first category is worth looking at systematically but the second category you should just deal with as you encounter them like any other word.

I was just browsing through Katsuo Tamaoka's publications that I'd missed (ages ago I'd linked to their '90s overview of interactive activation/reading models as applied to kanji—Edit: oops, he also co-wrote that paper on how stroke order doesn't contribute to kanji lexical knowledge except through radicals, but radical knowledge contributes to all aspects), and skimmed through this the other day: Entropy and Redundancy of Japanese Lexical and Syntactic Compound Verbs

(There's a frequency list, but the corpora and criteria might not be the best for general use.)

Seems like you'd want to focus on transitivity and respect related stuff, if that's a pattern.
