There might be a possibility that I will be studying in APU, Japan,別府 from september( not sure yet though)
In that case the program would be 3-4 years.
I've been thinking of taking 1 year for advancing my Japanese from Intermediate to Advanced.


The whole second year I would learn either Mandarin or Korean, and during the third year I would like to be an exchange student either in: China, Taiwan or South Korea.
Which countries of those 3 have the best possibilities of an exchange program with a Japanese university?

Also, If I will be a foreigner studying in a Japanese university, will my chances of being an exchange student in one of those 3 countries be different than that of an usual Japanese person studying at an uni?

You should probably email APU and ask. I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference though.

Seems they Have 18 places for Taiwan and 35 for Korea, and nothing for China.

I don't think you can't do that. It's an literal exchange of students between two universities. If you wanted to do attend a university that's not a partner of APU you'd be better off graduating and then going as a postgraduate student.

I know for a fact that if you're Chinese studying in APU you can go to Europe on exchange, so I don't see why you couldn't go to Asia (or Europe, should you fancy that).

If you wanna learn Mandarin, and can stomach simplified characters, then China would be the best bet. In China, you will regularly be spoken to in Chinese. Taiwan is a close second (and its characters are more similar to Japanese), but is more expensive (still cheap though) and has more people looking for English practice. Avoiding the big cities would solve that problem though I guess.

Korean... is hard.

"China" without qualifications typically refers to mainland China, or PRC. Now, ROC or Republic of China does refer to Taiwan, but that's not what he said, and anyway it's more common to just say "Taiwan".
