Here's a partial translation of a forum thread from a Chinese forum for studying Japanese. In particular, posts saying "Thanks!" etc have been omitted. This thread focuses on basic pronunciation and Japanese "pitch accent".

I think these 0,1,2,3... these sounds/marks aren't very easy to remember, we must practice repeatly.

嗯 其实不用非常刻意地去记哪个单词到底是对应“⓪①②③”中的哪个
Sure, but you don't need to go out of your way to remember which number apply to which word.

你多听听磁带或配套正规的MP3里面的发音,跟着模仿,然后自己多加练习
You should listen to the proper pronunciation from the attached tapes or MP3, and then imitate and practice a lot.

习惯都能成自然 更何况多听多练,还可以培养一定的语感呢
Practice makes perfect. Moreover listening and practicing a lot will make you get a feeling for the language.

等熟了之后,就会找到一定的语感语音规律 那时就可以很自然地发出标准日语音啦
After you get used to it you will get a feel for the language and its sound system. Then you'll be able to very naturally/easily/fluently speak (fluent) standard Japanese.

嘿嘿 加油哈
Cheer up!

The thread master (the top post) explains it well. It's just that I feel I can't get a grasp of the high vs low sounds... even with 1234 marked after the words

可以跟着磁带或MP3多听、模仿、多练习下

You can follow the tape/mp3 and listen, imitate and practice a bit more.

I felt it was much clearer than what our teacher said in class; the explanation about type 1 and type 2 was especially clear.
