I'm looking for books that will really get me motivated to read them. I can read at middle school level, but if the book is good enough, I'm sure I can be motivated to slug through a harder one.

Mostly, I would like some good Scifi novels, but good fantasy is also an option, especially if magic is involved.

I only have 1 so far to list:
"All You Need Is Kill" is a scifi book that I read in English, and I'll eventually read the Japanese one. It was very, very good.

Anyone got any other recommendations?

Loved Hardboiled Wonderland and the end of the world, but there's "hard Murakami" and "easy Murakami" and it's definitely the latter.

獣の奏者 is a good one for sure! Also "Toki wo kakeru shoujo" and Miyabe Miyuki's "Brave Story."

That's kind of the point. How do you figure out which of 3 million books are worth reading, when you can barely read the language? You ask friends for recommendations. Thus, this thread.

Didn't you say that you can read at Middle School level? If that's the case, you can understand 90% of everything that's written on Amazon.

There are customer reviews where you can just read them and see if the book is worth reading.

Maybe 'can read' gives the wrong impression. For an enjoyable book, I can enjoy reading at a middle school level, despite the work I have to do looking things up. I can read at a decent speed on a lower level.

I -could- read Amazon reviews, but even as fast as I read in English, I hate reading reviews on Amazon. For some reason, people want to write a novel for the review... Like it's some kind of game to see who can be the most flowery. They typical say nothing other than 'I'm a fanboy'.

I can read English at considerably better than Middle School level :-) but I still wouldn't try to use amazon.co.uk reviews to identify books worth reading. The volume of books is so huge, where do you start? I'd much rather find one person who writes a few interesting reviews of the kind of books I like, than a huge number of more-or-less anonymous people reviewing everything. (For English-language SF/Fantasy, for me that's Jo Walton's blog of rereads.)
