New mnemonic system for kanji

#1
Im working on a mnemonic system for kanji and the vocabulary. This system helps you to remember all of the parts including the onyomi readings. I will put it on the anki download list. Here is the format:

kanji: person name for onyomi/meaning/radical
掻 sofia scratched the chalkboard with her hands "so"fia "scratched" "hands"

努 dora's diligence was a powerful motivator "do"ra "diligence" "powerful"

I only have a couple of hundred done if someone once to contribute it would be helpful

the name is "kanji mnemonics"

Ah I'll be quick because I know there'll be much better more detailed posts filled with links from previous discussions, but this isn't the way to go.

You may get hung up later down the track. Your stories aren't really stories, they're just rote-learn-worthy lines. I feel that this won't work and you're trying to shove way too much down your throat in one go.

So many have suggested that it's better simply learning readings naturally (I'm with this approach), where as others have suggested that if you're going to learn readings, learn it by radicals.

But - if it works for you it works. That being said, I can only see this working for a few odd characters, and not 2000 or so.

Best of luck.

I agree with liosama. This is not a fruitful road to go down, and it seems like it could become confusing with your existing RTK stories.

Readings are something you'll pick up through ordinary vocabulary building, though it can be helpful to pay attention to certain radicals. Those radicals can be their own kind of mnemonic for remembering readings of different kanji.

Don't listen to the naysayers. It's totally doable to work in onyomi into your stories. Just make sure you use a consistent mnemonic for each sound, eg Use 'Dora' for all 'do' kanji. That way you reinforce the mnemonic as you encounter new kanji with the same reading. Also be sure to test your self on the writing and onyomi when review your cards, again to really reinforce it.
One more thing, you don't have to learn an onyomi for all kanji. Can't think of a good one? skip it. Try to finish RTK quick so you can start reading and learning words.

Ditto. It's just gonna be harder and longer to complete RTK1 this way.

What would be interesting is if you can sort of do a second pass and expand your stories with Onyomi "primitives" as you keep on reviewing after completing RTK. I think that should work, but you'd need very colourful primitives and there are quite a lot of onyomi...
