The Japanese Have a Word for It!

唐変木 is a long time favorite. I love the sound of it.

言わ猿

They make the zaru into the kanji for monkey for that proverb with the wise monkeys.

for the normal verb conjugation stuff like sezaru wo enai... zaru is left in hiragana. there's no kanji for it.

I thought it was cute

Thanks for the link Josh. I should probably avoid using マクる if it's pretty much just used by high school students, but to hell with it.

Everyone who has lived in Japan for any length of time knows that certain things or images are closely associated with a season, and vice-versa. This goes well beyond what I was used to in America, where seasonal associations don't go very far beyond snow=winter.

Anyway, I was reading the Japanese Wikipedia article for 桜, and came across this word:
風物詩 (ふうぶつし)

Things which remind someone of a particular season. A big thing in Japanese culture, but I had never heard the word until now.

Used in a name that I could never remember the reading for: 妖刀 五月雨(ようとうさみだれ).
