I remember years ago while I was listening to random Jpod101 beginner S1 lessons, Yoshi used a really long-winded way to say "thank you" which Peter suggested to use when someone opens a door for you as a joke. (Can't remember what it was though x_x)
For example, are there any interesting ways to say Happy Birthday? 誕生日おめでとう sounds so boring to me. I don't think there's much variation in English but I'm pretty sure that Chinese have some complex ways to wish someone happy birthday when it involves one's elders or someone with a high social status.
There's also a few cool Japanese people that will be leaving/ that I will be leaving behind soon and I really have no clue what to say to them (heck, I think farewells are awkward even in English ). Any ideas?
