This year the circle season seemed to be getting a very early start with two crop circles in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. But I haven't heard of any other since ... :/

Crop circles are real. They are in the fields. They have been photographed for more than twenty years now.

Yes, that wasn't a troll. Rather than saying ‘aren't crop circles just made by humans?’ I went to the Wikipedia page to read about a consensus and/or lack thereof and found that bit about wallabies. I thought it was cute and interesting, both from the perspective of spokespersons looking at alternatives to alien communication and human creation, and because, well, doped up wallabies crashing about is hilarious.

Maybe the later comments fed into the idea I was poking fun at you? I thought you'd find it interesting and amusing.

Personally I like your style of speculating on this stuff. I've always found your perspective refreshing and lucid, even when I disagree.

Edit: PS, I thought you did complain about my academic paper posts, saying something like you didn't know why I posted all those science links because it's not set in stone and thus not worth all the posts. Something like that. That's why you don't see me creating as many of those threads anymore, every time I did I thought of you rolling your eyes. -_-

This thread is funny. Because of all the forums I read I got to say that without question this forum is the least tolerant of any of them. People getting angry at each other's taste in media, people misinterpreting what other people say as personal attacks, people with seemingly low self-esteem that insult others just to make themselves look good, etc.

I will leave my opinion on crop circles private :-)

I really don't think this is bullying, it's just healthy discussion. Nobody said "Fabrice you dumbass, how can you believe all this crap?". nest0r posted a relevant link (that's what he was programmed to do) and bodhi made a comment in jest, it was teasing but not bullying by any stretch. Man up!

We must visit very different forums - this is the most tolerant of any I visit. Those things you describe happen much more often on other forums, but here there is a lot more rational challenge and free exchange of opinion between people who, in my experience, are more worthwhile talking to than those in most other internet communities.

Who wants to have a conversation where one person puts forward an idea, then everyone else agrees? If I wanted that I'd talk to myself. If you don't want to have your ideas challenged, weighed, considered and maybe ridiculed by others then you should keep them to yourself. I think all those things are what makes conversation fun and helps us improve our ideas and carve out our identities.

I watched the whole thing. I kept hoping it was going to get to something interesting, but then the credits started rolling. That was probably the worst and arguably most boring documentary I've ever seen. I'm still not even sure if I understand what the point of it was. There are crop circles, and some people study them and have ideas about them? Ok, I'm pretty sure everyone already knew that, but maybe I was mistaken lol.

@activeaero: I agree. But for people who never heard of crop circles, it's not too bad. Colin Andrew's talk is a lot more interesting as it goes on behind the scenes and addresses the relations between various communities involved. To be honest I didn't understand his conclusion either. He seemed to say that nowadays the vast majority of the circles are proven to be man made but at the same time implies that there is a form of consciousness experiment.

Well, this UFO thing, i remember having had a similar incident in my region. People calling the police, because they saw an unknown flying object, which moved to fast to be manmade. Described as standing still in the night sky, then making some movements in an unreal speed, and then vanishing again. I have not seen it myself, and the press picked it up, proving that it was a shooting star, or something of that nature. I found that hilarious, how sane people start seeing things, and believing that to have been an UFO. Corn circles, however, are a real phenomenon. I remember back in the 90's when this was present for some time. The hype was waning off, when the U.K. military was able to film some people, making them. For most people the riddle was solved, man made, on to the next mystery.

Years later there has been a report, looking at the Crop circles from a mathematical point of view, proofing in some way or other, that it is very well possible, that even the most complex shapes can be man made. Corn Circles are nice to look at, same with the stone figures, one can see from high up in the air in - was it Guatemala? Not sure.

At school that might have counted as bullying if it was directed at one person consistently over time, but among adults it's snide at worst, but normally just a sign of familiarity, because adults are taken to be robust enough to deal with that kind of stuff and/or not even notice it. I take it as a sign of a good friendship or social relationship if there is some light-hearted teasing.

In any case ファブリス surely you can see that some of your interests are ripe territory for sarcastic comments? UFOs/crop circles are classic conspiracy theory material, and conspiracy theories are rightly fair game. Nobody would question your right to post it, but surely others have the right to say if they think it's silly?

I think it's more about the material you chose to write about than any direct thing against you personally or any judgment on you as an admin. It's more of a positive comment about the community that people don't feel afraid to be familiar with each other.

Interestingly, I believed in the Zeitgeist films when I was depressed and the friend who recommended the film, who used to believe in David Icke's theories, told me that since he got a girlfriend, became more popular at school and so on- he stopped believing those ideas entirely.

I didn't realize crop circles were such a hot-button issue. My distaste not only for tacky alien stereotypes as much as what they represent, e.g. distaste for those who perpetuate them by being critical and invoking those canards at the slighest provocation, has actually resulted in me being more open-minded and fascinated by this stuff, to the extent that I leave a space in my conception of the universe not only for new scientific findings, but for pure magic. It's not like we're talking about religious fundamentalism or something.

My favourite thinkers who make great intellectual contributions to society tend to be into all manner of esoteric topics that many would scoff at but in some permutation turn out to be true or are worth thinking about for their own sake. I think it comes with the territory.

I think a bit more diplomacy is required, is all I'm saying. There's familiarity, then there's dissing. Don't hate.

well... in the vast expanse (infinity?) of the universe, i think it's rationally implausible to beleive that earth is the only planet that had the right conditions to hold life... dunno about crop circles or any alien visitations though.

But anyway... Fabrice, i often enjoy your topics. There's lots of different people here, nobody can interest everyone all the time...

Also... i think, about the laughing thing, as an adult, it really is the people who can laugh directly and make jokes about something you've said that you can trust aren't bullying you! Something like what Bodhisamaya wrote wasn't supposed to be hurtful, just funny, to you as well as other people. (look at most of his other posts, lots of them are funny! i laughed out loud at his one in the "ghost cities of China" thread).

Making a joke like Bodhi did above is really something that's a sign of acceptance, and being part of a group!!! It's something that can really make you feel a lot more comfortable around other people. Sometimes you also have to laugh about how your seen by other people too right?

I don't want to be insensitive. You can believe whatever you want about crop circles, but I'll continue to be skeptical about explanations that lack convincing evidence.

And about Libya, that's offtopic, but I think that the intervention in Libya can be defended on the basis of compassion and empathy for the Libyan people.

Oh I'm sure that's what the president said. It takes great wisdom and courage to not intervene and realize that the will to "help" is often a disguised way of fulfilling one's own needs.

P.S.: in case that wasn't obvious, I didn't expect people to be interested or to agree. I was not looking to debate either as I know all too well what I was getting into. But somehow I foolishly hoped that the thread would be ignored by the uninterested or receive sensible comments. I was really pissed of at the first two comments. End of story.

I had my phase of being fascinated with conspiracy theories and the possibility of alien visitors 15-20 years ago. I lived in Las Vegas and bought up most every book and video from the Psychic Eye book store. I would take off from work for the week to attend the Psychic Convention buying up all the lecture tickets. I got to know many of the authors and slowly began to come away with the impression most of them were nuts, or motivated by more terrestrial incentives. No matter how fantastic or unbelievable their stories, the audience would marvel at what they heard leaving angry at the government for suppressing this information.

My wife at the time got to know the owner of the Psychic Eye book chain and was offered a job as a reader. He assured her none of his psychic staff were authentic and mocked his customers for buying into such nonsense. Her bubbly personality would be all she needed to make lots of money he assured. She did not tell him out of disgust for what he just said, but she in fact did have some sort of ability to know things about the future I personally witnessed many times. She had no control over when it would happen though and was not the type to use that to cheat people.

The harm that comes from all this is that it diverts the focus and resources of passionate and imaginative people who would be more likely to embrace ideas that actually do accomplish positive things in the world that do alleviate real suffering. The followers of such pseudoscience tend to be very compassionate people who are easily led astray by parlor tricks. It is such a waste and often feels criminal to me.
