As the title says Im looking for temple lodgings in Kyoto. Im planning a trip there in mid April and Im trying to arrange a one or two night stay in a buddhist temple as well as experiencing life through the eyes of a monk. Ive done a little poking around on the net and found this place http://www.taizoin.com/en/taizoin.php?itemid=17&catid=5 . It seems just what Im looking for, zazen lessons, shoudo lessons etc. but I just want to make sure I dont sign up for the Disneyland of temple experiences. If anyone has any advice on the subject it would be greatly appreciated.

Why not just go to Koya-san? It's actually in Wakayama, but I imagine the train trip there from Kyoto wouldn't take very long, nor would it cost so much. Just saying because Koya-san is particularly famous for temple lodging.

(Japan-guide only mentions morning prayers, but I'm sure there are temples there that do a lot more than that)

Also, haha, I live down the road from Taizoin, the link you posted. It's maybe a 15 minute walk from my apartment. Didn't realize they did temple lodgings^^
It's not really in a scenic area to be honest... Hanazono is a little dinky station halfway between Nijo and Arashiyama--two much nicer parts of town.
There's a Bookoff though, so I sometimes bike over there
But, the temple grounds might be nice. If you want, I could visit and let you know if the place looks nice. Looks like it's only 500 yen to enter.

This sounds really interesting. I can't help, but just wanted to say I would be interested to hear how this works out.
