So, I have all of these textbooks and resources...

I'm still paying the $17k+ loan for my university tuition, and I graduated in 2006.
Nah, it'd still be cheaper at your college. Smile It's probably around 400 or so for a 5-credit class (what languages are), plus a 200$ textbook.

It's probably 1000 for a 4-credit language course at my current uni...ouch.

Anyways, off topic.

yep the core 2000 is the more common words and if you learn by the steps it's futher graded by how common the words are. Although some of the ordering is a bit weird.

From what I can remem KO is sorted by kanji so you get loads of not that useful words that have easy kanji.

Basically if you did core 2000 then you'd have pretty much all the vocab you'd need for JLPTN4 but i dont know if you did the first 2000 from KO whether it would cover what you need (it might I just don't know)

Ask about auditing a class. It's like taking it, only you don't get credit. If you just want a Japanese language coach, and you don't care about the credits (I didn't), then you can just do that. I audited 4 semesters at UNC for $25/semester after I finished grad school when I first started Japanese around 2002.

Now I take a weekly JLPT prep class at the NC Japan center. It's more focused for what I want: there are only 4 of us; we're all grown-ups (or old farts, depending on your perspective); the classes are at night (works better with my schedule); and I don't have to mess with university parking. Whee. Runs about $150/semester there. Still worth it for the small class size. There might be something similar near you.

I wasn't expecting everyone to make such long, informative posts! I feel almost bad that you've spent so much time replying to my posts. Tongue

@nohika: Thank you, yeah, I just didn't understand the terminology you were using.

I'd had a quick browse of the yomichan thread before reading your post but didn't really get it. Your post has summed it up nicely Tongue

I didn't realise you were referring to the JLPT when you said 'N'. I was thinking equations, haha.

But yes, thanks, that helps a lot now that I understand!

@kainzero: Your point is true about wherever you rip sentences from, they will be boring in isolation. I just worry that I will get burnt out easily if the sentences are too difficult to start with. Thank you.

@prink: Woah, that source is really, really useful. I didn't realise there was a site like that. Bookmarked! Thanks!

@rich_f: Thanks once again, I'll have a look at kore (too many options! Tongue... better than not enough, though)

@caivana: Cheers, that's very helpful!

No problem! Smile Yomichan has saved my college-swamped butt, making it easier to input cards, etc.

There's a lot of terminology on this site, and it took a long time to get used to it! Dun worry about it. Big Grin

Okay, now to go eat lunch and stop being crazy..
