I've been in a very similar situation (twice meanwhile, shame on me), I just had a larger pile of open reviews.

Same as you, I asked here for tips.

I found one tip particularly helpful:
Go for a very quick review through all your open cards. That initial review doesn't take long. The cards that you remember are a sure pass, so just after the first review you'll reduce your pile by maybe 10-20% (for me it was closer to 10%, I believe).

It's not much, but better than nothing.

I then started to re-study the pile of failed cards, while continue to do the review on the rest of the deck.
Since I'd known the cards before, re-learning took less than half of the time of the original study.

As for your grading issue, I'd rather fail cards that you can't generate from the keyword only. As far as I understand Anki's schedulling system, even pressing hard will schedule that card in ab bit less time than you had since you last passed it. That may still be too far out, isn't it?

I got curious so I searched up the thread you mentioned you posted. After reading it I feel a lot better that I am not the only one who has gotten into a situation like this before.

I'm really motivated to get through these reviews and back on the road to studying now.

I set anki to put failed cards at the end so I'm going to get through all the initial reviews like you suggested. Thanks for the great help.

And yeah, you are right about the scheduling system. With most of these cards, if I push 'hard' it will send it 1-2 months forward... perhaps too far for some which I am getting lucky on

No one here is right or wrong, everyone has different methods.

Recalling the book, even heisig recommends putting the story (upside down) on the front of the card. Of course he is not using SRS but old fashioned flash cards, so perhaps having the story on the front is a method still needing to be explored...

Besides in the end, we will not be using the keywords to write the kanji, it's all just a learning mnemonic whether its a story or keyword... this stuff is way too complicated for me to even understand.

edit: urgh so annoying though, anki keeps resetting to where it puts failed cards 'custom order' even when I tell it to put them at the end. guh

I use this site for my kanji but anki for everything else

I know this is absolutely contradictory to what everyone else is saying, but I say, restart. If you're failing 75% and needing stories for 20% (which I would consider a fail also as per what Dustin said) you're at 95% fail rate, which means you're basically at that rate you remember about 50 kanji, which could be done in a day. Since you haven't reviewed in a long time and your failing rate is so high I don't think your brain had retained the information of the kanjis and had reset the neurons in your brain, so when you are seeing the kanji you're probably relearning them for the first time basically (as opposed to possible cue-dependant forgetting) and when you see the kanji the 2nd or 3rd time you're probably actually just remembering it due to the exposure just recently as if you've remembered it all along but your brain just thinks that's what's happening (memory biases).

Sorry to be a downer about this, but that's my honest opinion of what's going on.

Almost forgot, you should probably check your kanji outside of anki or SRSing to make sure you're not recalling due to the context effect.

starting over and going slow, will eventually outplace how far you've gone now(you'll remember more if you go slower/maintain)

Add 10 per day and you won't feel anything, or barely anything at least

everyone has different paces, slow is better than fast in terms of srsing. But the most important is maintaining.

I've already gone through 500 reviews and yes, I've failed many of them. On the other hand, many times even when I see one for the second or third time I am able to write them, as if I've unlocked some memory from the deep recesses in my brain.

So I'm going to keep going with the 'review' path.

Hello~! This is my first time in this forum!

I gave up studying about 4 months ago, and when I decided to come back I had like 350 reviews to do (not much compared to the original 999 reviews of this post, but 350 was like 98% of the kanji I had in my deck!).

At first I was discouraged but then I thought: If I can pass through this I can go on this time (since it was the second time I gave up at the same ammount of kanji).

It took me 1.5 hours to do the review since I wrote each kanji, but in the end I got 86% retain! I was SO HAPPY that I decided that I would continue at my own pace (I go to the university during the day and work during the afternoon) and wouldn't care about others!

I am so motivated right now, sometimes I just skip a week but I go on! Don't start over, is BORING, and even if you don't realize it you already know most of the kanji! Search for something new to motivate yourself!

I'm facing the same problem myself.

I'm at Kanji 1570 and have about 750 failed, and 175 to be reviewed on the site.

And on Anki, I have 800 due in a vocab deck, 120 in an audio deck, and about 300 due in my Heisig deck. I haven't been keeping up with Anki in 3 weeks. I figure I'll knock out the audio one first and work on getting my reviews done, finish all the RtK on the site, and THEN work on the vocab/heisig decks. I don't know where to do from here. Been about 4-5 years and STILL haven't finished RtK.

I went through this site's reviews first and did 300 quick reviews today and passed about 50% of them. I plan on going through the failed list tommorrow and writing out the kanji. Maybe I can do something instead of memorizing stories and just....put in a few vocab words in thier place? Some of these I've been failing from the start and no story has helped much.

Also if you 750 failed cards, you might wanna consider redoing the steps to learn those kanji again.
