Simply:

Card created purely on Iphone.

1) Create deck (fields whatever).
2) Snap of a picture of the manga frame using your phone/camera.
3) Edit, if you're using PC.
4) Add picture to card using "add from gallery" under Actions panel in Ankimobile. (PC: just drop the picture into the field)
5) Sentence gloss using Japanese dictionary app (snap a shot using your Iphone snapshot [hold home then push power button once]) You could also use the Edict sentence gloss thing and use "Snapshot" or printscreen and paste it into anki (Your keyboard has this button. Just select the field in Anki and CTRL+V. That will paste the image in.) - "Snapshot" is way, way better (select an area of screen.) Snapshot Text Gloss
6) Add to deck.
7) Record audio if you want to (I just read it out loud as my pron is fine.)
7 LEVEL UP MODE) If your manga has an anime it goes with then you could play it on your PC and rip the line that fits (this sounds like more work than it's worth unless you do it all at the same time) to your card (therefore, getting native level material.)
8) Job done.

This took me around 1.5 minute to create the first time. I think 30-50 seconds per sentence card would be a pretty pacey speed. You would be looking at 2.5+ minutes of fast work for one page. Then again that's probably 15 sentences (page 24 has a rather heavy section on the bottom). The overall efficiency could be 100 or so sentences an hour (24 pages). I don't really know though.

It turns out it's slightly faster on the desktop. It doesn't look as nice, but the text gloss with the keyboard was quite a bit faster.

I think this would also work well with books as you could use snapshot to isolate the line of the text you are reading on the image you took with your camera and could add that to your card fairly easily. Hmmm... looks like I'm going AJATT guys from now on! Bye, bye vocab cards, lol. (Even my dairy entry vocab cards have the corrected sentence on them. I should just give up and admit to joining the guild of Khatz. Where's my cat hat!)

(Probably my issue with AJATT was the time to input sentences from native material and translate words you don't know.)

(This might be even better if I isolate one word for testing, as then I can pass the entire card based on that rather than fully understanding something that might be above my current level.)

Are you.... missing a step here? How do you get a breakdown of the sentence using Breen's functionality or this Japanese app based purely on a screenshot? As far as I'm aware, neither WWWJDIC's or overture's programs OCR + gloss at the same time. I doubt Japanese does, either, unless they found some sort of Word Lens-like integration?

So, how'd you get the text? OCR integration that's not been discussed? A separate, unmentioned OCR step? If you have to transcribe it I'm not sure it's worth the effort. If you can transcribe it in seconds, then I'm not sure it's worth SRSing unless you relied purely on furigana and have little knowledge of most of the sentence's words.

Also, this is pretty neat, if I were creating cards every once in a while on the iPod, but honestly I couldn't imagine doing it outside of the iPod or in batches. I don't really see the iOS as a good platform for making decks. I like that Japanese has an undocumented (?) glossing function, that you found, though, or that you even pointed it out because I don't think it'd been mentioned before your previous thread? A nice counterbalance to that CJK sentence thread, re: what features the app has... ;p

I do think conquering manga is the next step for us, though, re: tools for processing. That's a bit of a knotty one. Are you familiar with Capture2Text? As the name implies, it involves simultaneous screen capture + OCR: http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=6769 — We talk a bit about potential subs2srs/vobsub/manga/dictionary integration with C2T there.

Also: Windows 7 also comes with a snipping tool for user-defined screenshots. It works well with OneNote and Windows Journal. There's actually quite a few screenshot programs out there. But I believe cb4960's tool is the first that lets you simultaneously screenshot + OCR Japanese + copy results to clipboard, though. (The OCRs aren't as fond of 縦書き, however.)

Also not sure recording your own voice and using it on cards is a habit worth starting, but that depends on what you're using the resulting audio for and your overall strategy.

I don't think there's any purpose in recording your own voice on the card; unless you're comparing your recording with a native speaker reading it, I don't see how it can help to hear yourself talk.

(Also what happened to たわけ and ヘマ on the card? Also, 訳 is わけ here, not やく, and 訳がなかろう is a grammatical unit that's a somewhat archaic version of わけがないだろう.)

"Wink" "Wink" Just type in the words you don't know. The sentence above took a few seconds to isolate the words I didn't know (well know well, but needed an example).

One thing I am tinkering with is the Microsoft IMEs Kanji input ability. If this works you could draw in anything you don't know. Otherwise, you rely on knowing another word with the Kanji.

Note: In my case I just buy manga with Furigana, as I'm not good with readings yet. (Level appropriate material is important. If you can't read the readings then no need to rush to the heavy stuff. Through consistent exposure over time they will come, or through concentrated effort.)

This is all really experimental right now, but I agree that it is best done with a camera and PC for the best efficiency level.

@Yudantaiteki: My Iphone splits it up a bit better than the text gloss. I dumped たわけ and ヘマ as I didn't need them. "わけがないだろう" is nice to know. I thought it was わけ too, based on the context. I didn't realize they were a pair though. The text gloss isn't perfect and I didn't edit it. This is one of the reasons why I always have a notes field on my cards.

Just a note. There was one word I wasn't sure of: 訳がなかろう. That was it for me on the card. The rest is just for example. You could just cut and paste the input into a field and edit it (I would as it's worth it.)

I agree. Probably it would be best to rip it from the anime, which for bleach you usually get probably 5 out of 10 lines in the earlier manga. I think if you do listening-reading type methods it wouldn't be hard to just do a quick search by page and use the tool Nestor mentioned above, Jing, to record it on the fly (or somehow set Anki up to record from your speakers.) I would only do it if I was actually doing this sort of method above (I usually do it on my iPhone, but I might try it on my PC for a bit and see how this works. Anyway, I think recording yourself is no big issue, if you know your pron. is good, but it's not for everyone I think. I might go for the listen-reading idea above.

One thing I like from this is that if you mix Manga, Anime and these cards together you could make some very nice Subs2srs type cards with a bit of work (2 hours for 20-30 pages maybe? I can usually mine vocab from 20 in 30-40 minutes, so not impossible. And the deck would last for months as well as the audio and manga as you reuse over and over.)

I'll try the above in the weekend and see how I go.

Yes, I think you have to type the sentence when transcribing, since handwriting recognition of sentences is only in WritePad as far as I know, on the iOS (and that's for English).

So it's just transcription after adding a screenshot of the manga panel to Anki, glossing it in Japanese, and then taking a screenshot of the text gloss in Japanese and pasting it into Anki?

I don't know, I've never bothered making a card like that, seems like more trouble than its worth. ^_^ Usually if I come across unknown words that I want to SRS, I add them to a text file using tools like Lingoes/Stardict//Capture2Text/background typing (another cb4960 creation) and then when they accumulate I add them to Anki. (There's also the Rikaichan mod.) Now with Yomichan I just open that text file and add cards like that. Plus in case you forgot, there's overture's glossing plugin for single or batched sentences you already have in decks.

I guess if you do a lot of raw furigana'd manga reading on your iOS and you really want to create the card right away, I can see this as a useful infrequent tool.

Anyway now it sounds like I'm dissing your idea. It's not bad, it's good to know ways to streamline inter-app Japanese self-study tools on the iOS.

And even if you think your pronunciation is fine, I wouldn't trust it since you're talking about the pitch accent and prosody of words you don't know?

And the ‘snipping tool’ and the plethora of other tools for Windows besides Snapshot/alt+printscreen is the one that nest0r mentioned. ;p I've been using it with my tm2.

Hehe, Nestor. I totally understand where your coming from. Not everything works for everyone, but I find the feedback quite useful (the ideas and resources I get from other people really help me to get places with my Japanese.)
