Back Story:
So restarted RTK this month at a pace of 110. (I did the whole book a year ago and did my own thing and I can read most if not all of them but I lost the ability to write roughly a quarter of them -- sad I know.) My goal is to finish not only RTK 1 but 3 (and some 200 other kanji I found which I call RTK 4)

So this month is dedicated to kanji study exclusively. I even bought 漢検DS3.


Questions: I am making the ultimate 漢字 deck and I want to add vocabulary that use kanji and have readings an definitions on the back. Words would be for 音読み and 訓読み respectively without studying the readings -- something I never liked doing. Does it help to have BOTH Eng-Jap and Jap-Eng cards? I think I'm going to do some production cards. For those I just need something like this, right?

I want to get rid of English yet I still find myself confused with Japanese explanations. I was thinking of adding pictures to help understanding and leave out the English. Do you have an experience like this?

I do that for my production deck, kana to the question and answer contains kanji/short translation. Although I don't give myself a hint for the kana. Why? It's because I can tell when I can write a lot of different kanji associated with that reading. Although since I know how to read most kanji now. It makes my life easier to visual/write it.

It will eventually lead to writing flawlessly from memory if done right(or at least for most general things)

J-J explanations gets easier as you know more vocab. That's what I've found.

Talking about anki deck making I have a question. my current deck has the following structure (roughly):

[from the "Japanese corePLUS" giant file, extracted the JLPT3 cards only]
Q:
-Kanji (of a compound/vocabulary)
-Sentence (plus its corresponding audio)

A:
-Reading of the compound/vocabulary
-Meaning of the compound/vocabulary

(How is that called then? Do you refer to such a structure as "recognition" or "recall" or "production"?)

I recognised that my reading abilities were boosted enormously and I can read the words out aloud and understand their meaning but once it comes to using thema actively, f.e. writing entries at lang-8 or even talking, I have difficulties (see also here: http://torikuns-kitchen.blogspot.com/201...ution.html).
My question is: just making another deck file, with "A" turning into the "Q", vise-versa? Could shadowing also help/support me in this case? Thanks for any help and feedback.

This feels like recognition to me, since your giving the kanji in the question field and recalling it in the answer section.

To improve output it's simply, shadowing,increase your passive vocab,keep srsing and work on the simple things first. Most people say, you should worry about listening/reading more than anything. As output usual takes half the time to get good if you've got good listening/reading.

Also post things you know is correct 100%, as it starts a good foundation to keep going.

as for the speaking/writing out well. You just need practice. Remember there are usual two types of learners. People who are good speakers and those that are good readers. Eventually you'll be both.

I've learned that if you can get good at once thing, you can get good at anything. The sky's the limit.

Thank you for the reply, ta12121! Would you also suggest "reversing" my current deck structure to gain more active vocabulary or rather not? I recognised that going through my core deck increased my kanji reading knowledge. Though, my listening skills are really weak and it is still (after a year) very difficult to hear whattheyactuallysay. <- it sounds like that. As you can see on my page, I uploaded a few mp3 files (examples for my shadowing), what do you say?

Edit: I just took various mp3 files from the .media folder and merged them with a programm. Unfortunately I do not know how to pick only those mp3 files I already know and have added as cards for reps (in Anki, by cards). Any idea how to accomplish that?!?

Listening, I'm not sure how it happened. I srsed a lot/listened a lot. It did take me about 8months to get to that 90%+ for listening.
Transcript are key for this. Try to associate audio to your srsing if possible. Helps a lot.

I usual use for my sentence deck is. Question contains full kanji/kana. Answer contains all the readings/small translation if applicable(monolingual or a short translation in english)

I use the same format for my vocab deck, only difference is small cards compared to my sentence deck.
