Just found this out today. On the iGoogle home page, on the left side there are suggestions to "Add Contacts".

There are a bunch of translator bots there that you can add to your contact list. Works in Adium on Mac. I suppose it works in most chat programs.

English to Chinese Translator en2zh@bot.talk.google.com
Chinese to English Translator zh2en@bot.talk.google.com
Traditional Chinese to English Translator zh-hant2en@bot.talk.google.com
Japanese to English Translator ja2en@bot.talk.google.com

Etc.

Sounds useful, if you don't mind having "bots" in your contact list

Google also released a translator app for iOS (iPhone/iPod Touch) that's kinda interesting.
