Any rom hackers around here?

I really want to get at the scripts from the game Little Charo for the DS, so I can put them into Anki. I got the files unpacked from the rom, but the scripts are stored in some ".pck" archive, and I can't figure out what to do from here.

For those curious about the game, Little Charo is essentially a children's visual novel in bilingual English/Japanese, and uses VERY simple language. The story is actually quite engaging, so I think this is one of the best games for learning Japanese out there!

First you want to figure out if the script is compressed or not. If it's not compressed, you can create a table for the Japanese characters an extract the script fairly easily. If it is compressed, seriously, find something else. It's not really worth your time.

How would I find out?
If I open the scripts in a text editor, I can find bits and parts of the actual (english) text in there, but most of it looks like gibberish.

Oh yea, and I think there were some small-ish .tbl files (or maybe they were .pck files in a tbl folder) that corresponded with each of the script files. Would that be related to the tables that you mentioned, maybe?

Honestly, it's always different with every game. I only have a small bit of experience with this sort of stuff, normally things are way out of my skill level to be able to do anything with them. It always depends on how the game was originally coded.

If your seeing some English, see if you can view the file with s-jis or utf-8 encoding.

For compressed information http://www.romhacking.net has a few documents you can read, stuff like relative searching and table files. But I'll warn you up front this stuff is pretty complicated.
